Biography

Short Description

Saint Aurelia of Strasbourg is a Christian saint whose historical existence is known almost entirely through a longstanding local cult centered on her tomb in what became the church of Sainte-Aurélie in Strasbourg, in Alsace. No contemporary writings about her survive, and the particulars of her life rest on medieval legends recorded long after the era in which she is supposed to have lived. Tradition commonly places her in late antiquity, often in the fourth century, although one important strand of the legend links her instead to the seventh-century missionary bishop Emmeram of Regensburg. Modern historians therefore treat her as an obscure holy woman whose grave attracted popular devotion, around which later hagiographers assembled more elaborate stories. The two principal legends do not agree with one another in date or family background, and neither can be verified from independent historical sources.

According to the better-known of those legends, Aurelia was one of the companions of Saint Ursula, the British princess who, with a great company of virgins, was said to have been martyred by the Huns at Cologne. In this account Aurelia fell ill as the pilgrims passed through Alsace and was left behind at Strasbourg. After recovering she chose not to rejoin the others and remained in the city as a recluse, living in prayer and penance until her death. A second tradition identifies her as a sister of Saint Emmeram. After her brother’s martyrdom in Bavaria she is said to have withdrawn to a hermitage near Strasbourg and to have spent the rest of her life in solitude. Both stories present her consistently as a consecrated virgin and anchoress rather than as a member of any formal religious order, and neither attributes to her a husband or children. The two figures—Aurelia of Strasbourg and the sister of Emmeram sometimes called Aurelia of Regensburg—were at times conflated in later devotion, which helps explain the conflicting centuries assigned to her.

The chapel that stood over her tomb developed into the parish church of Sainte-Aurélie in the Koenigshoffen district of Strasbourg, one of the city’s oldest ecclesiastical sites and originally associated with an extramural burial ground. Her cult was well established in the Middle Ages and gave the church its dedication. In 1524, after Strasbourg adopted the Reformation, Protestant reformers opened the tomb. Contemporary reports describe the discovery of the bones of a woman of small stature; the relics were subsequently removed or destroyed in the course of the reform of worship. Despite that interruption, Catholic memory of Aurelia continued to be attached to the church that bears her name, and the building itself remains an important witness to the early Christian topography of Strasbourg.

Aurelia is commemorated on 15 October. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; her status as a saint rests on ancient popular cult and local recognition, as was customary for early holy figures whose tombs became centers of pilgrimage. Beyond her association with Strasbourg and with the life of a recluse, no well-documented patronages of particular places, professions, illnesses, or causes are securely attached to her name in the major liturgical and hagiographical sources. The historical Aurelia, if she was a single historical person at all, remains largely inaccessible behind the legends; what can be affirmed with confidence is the endurance of her local cult and the church that grew up over her grave.
