Biography

Short Description

Aurelian, also known as Aurelianus, was metropolitan bishop of Arles in southern Gaul during the mid-sixth century. He occupied the see from 546 until his death in 551, succeeding Auxanius. In late antiquity Arles was one of the principal churches of Gaul: it had long claimed a leading place among Gallic bishoprics and a special relationship with the bishop of Rome. Almost nothing secure is known of Aurelian’s birth, parentage, or early career. Later writers have occasionally linked him to the episcopal circle of Lyon, including the family of Bishop Sacerdos, but the evidence is too thin to treat that kinship as established fact. He belongs to the generation that followed Saint Caesarius of Arles, whose preaching, monastic legislation, and defence of Gallic Catholicism still defined the religious landscape of Provence.

The most distinctive work of Aurelian’s short episcopate was monastic. He founded a monastery for men in Arles dedicated to the Holy Apostles, a house later associated with the title of Saint Peter, and he established a community of women under the patronage of the Virgin Mary. For both communities he issued written rules. These regulations stand in the direct line of the Caesarian tradition: they adapt the monastic legislation of Caesarius rather than importing the Rule of Benedict, which had not yet become the dominant code in Gaul. The rule for monks attributed to Aurelian survives and is valued by historians as a witness to sixth-century liturgical custom, enclosure, abbatial authority, and the daily round of a Provençal monastery. The parallel rule for nuns likewise shows a bishop attempting to give stable form to female religious life in his city.

Aurelian’s authority was not only local. Pope Vigilius granted him the pallium and recognized him as papal vicar in Gaul, thereby renewing a privilege that earlier popes had attached to the church of Arles. That vicariate made the bishop of Arles the ordinary intermediary between Rome and many of the churches of Gaul. The grant fell in a difficult period for the Roman see, marked by the Three Chapters controversy and by Justinian’s ecclesiastical politics, and it underscores the continuing effort to keep the Gallic hierarchy in communion with Rome. Beyond the pallium and the vicariate, the surviving record of Aurelian’s acts is limited; he appears as a disciplinarian and organizer rather than as a writer of treatises or as the president of well-documented councils.

He died in 551, after only about five years as archbishop. The Roman and Gallican martyrological tradition assigns his feast to 16 June. Veneration of Aurelian remained essentially local and liturgical. Like most saints of the sixth century he was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his cult rests on episcopal memory, monastic foundation, and insertion into the calendars of Arles and of the wider Latin church. The place of his death and the site of his burial are not recorded in sources that can be verified with confidence, though his memory is reasonably associated with the apostolic monastery he had founded in his own city.

Aurelian’s lasting importance is therefore institutional and textual rather than biographical. His rules preserve a stage in the history of Gallic monasticism between Caesarius and the later mixed rules of the seventh century. His brief tenure illustrates how the see of Arles still functioned, in the middle of the sixth century, as a bridge between the papacy and the churches of Gaul. For a figure of such office the personal dossier is strikingly small: no contemporary vita of any length survives, and modern reconstruction must rely on papal correspondence, the monastic rules themselves, and the terse notices of later martyrologies. That sparsity is itself a reminder of how much of sixth-century episcopal life in Provence has been lost.
