Biography

Short Description

Aurelius of Córdoba (Aurelio de Córdoba) was a Christian layman and martyr of the mid-ninth century in the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba in al-Andalus. Almost everything that can be stated about him with confidence derives from the Memoriale Sanctorum of Eulogius of Córdoba, a contemporary priest who recorded the Christians put to death in the city during the 850s. Eulogius presents Aurelius as a native of Córdoba, the son of a Muslim father and a Christian mother. After the father’s death a Christian aunt took charge of the boy, had him baptized, and raised him in the Christian faith. He inherited property and lived in the city as a man of some means. No reliable source records the year of his birth.

He married Sabigotho, a woman of similarly mixed Muslim and Christian parentage, who is also known by the Christian name Natalia. They had two daughters. Under Andalusi law, persons counted as Muslims by paternal descent who abandoned Islam were liable to capital punishment, and Eulogius describes the couple as having practiced Christianity with caution for a time. The public executions of other Córdoba Christians in the early 850s, beginning with the priest Perfectus in 850, are said to have moved them to a stricter and more visible Christian life, including almsgiving and closer association with other devout believers in the city.

Among those linked with them were Felix, a kinsman of Aurelius who had converted from Islam, and Felix’s wife Liliosa. A monk named George, whom Eulogius describes as having come from a monastery in the East, also joined their company. After the women made their Christianity publicly known—Eulogius relates that they went to church in a way that discarded the concealment some Córdoba Christians still used—the group was arrested. While imprisoned, Aurelius and Natalia arranged for their two young daughters to be placed in Christian care so that the children would be brought up in the faith.

On 27 July 852, during the emirate of Abd al-Rahman II, Aurelius, Natalia, Felix, Liliosa, and George were beheaded in Córdoba. Their deaths belong to the series often called the Martyrs of Córdoba, which Eulogius and his circle interpreted as Christian witness under Muslim rule. Aurelius and his companions have been venerated as saints in the Latin Church and are entered in the Roman Martyrology, with a feast on 27 July. No securely attested burial site, later translation of relics, or formal papal canonization distinct from the early medieval cult can be verified from the surviving sources.
