Biography

Short Description

Austind of Auch (also called Austinde or Austindus) was Archbishop of Auch in Gascony during the eleventh century. He governed the metropolitan see from about 1041 until his death in 1068. Reliable information about his birth, family, and early career has not survived; historical notices begin with his appointment to Auch, the chief church of Gascony, which exercised metropolitan rights over several suffragan dioceses in southwestern France. His episcopate fell in a period of feudal disorder and of the first concerted attempts at church reform associated with the Peace of God and with the policies later called Gregorian.

As archbishop, Austind sought to recover alienated church property, to restore clerical discipline, and to obtain papal confirmation of the privileges of his see. He is linked with restoration work on the cathedral of Sainte-Marie at Auch and with participation in regional councils, among them the mid-century gatherings at Toulouse that dealt with peace, the truce of God, and measures against simony. He supported monastic life in his province in an era when Cluniac and other reform currents were spreading through Aquitaine. The evidence for these activities is found chiefly in charters, conciliar lists, and later scholarly compilations such as Gallia Christiana, rather than in a contemporary saint’s life of independent historical value.

Austind died in 1068, the date 25 September being given as both the day of death and the day of his liturgical feast. A cult developed at Auch, and he was thereafter commemorated as a saint among the bishops of Gascony. No papal bull of canonization is known; his veneration remained local, as was usual for many reforming prelates of the eleventh century. Subsequent martyrologies and diocesan traditions preserved his name, but they add little that can be controlled by earlier documents.

The limits of the sources must be stressed. Claims concerning miracles, precise ancestry, or a detailed spiritual portrait cannot be verified from reliable historical material. What can be affirmed is that Austind was a long-serving metropolitan of Auch who took part in the ecclesiastical reconstruction of mid-eleventh-century Gascony, defended the rights of his church, and stood with the reforming party in the Latin West. His career is thus of interest both for the history of the see of Auch and for the regional implementation of eleventh-century church reform.
