Biography

Short Description

Austrebertha, also known as Austreberta or Austreberthe, was a Merovingian-era abbess whose life is known principally from later medieval hagiography and from the liturgical tradition of northern France. She is generally held to have been born about 630 at Thérouanne in Artois, then part of the Frankish kingdom. Her father is named in the sources as Badefrid (or Badefrid), a count or courtier, and her mother as Framechildis (Framehilde), a woman of piety whom some later calendars commemorated as a saint. The family belonged to the Frankish aristocracy connected with the courts of the later Merovingian kings, including the circle of Dagobert I. Little that is strictly contemporary survives; the outline of her origin in Artois and her noble birth is the consistent claim of her vitae.

Determined from youth to embrace the monastic life, Austrebertha refused the marriage that her parents had arranged. Legend, following a pattern common in lives of early medieval holy women, recounts that she prayed to be delivered from suitors and that her appearance was miraculously altered until her vocation was accepted, after which her former beauty was restored. She received the veil from Saint Audomarus (Saint Omer), bishop of Thérouanne, and entered the monastery of Port (Port-le-Grand) near Abbeville in Ponthieu. There she lived under monastic discipline before being chosen to lead a new community of women.

The monastery of Pavilly in the Pays de Caux, in what is now Seine-Maritime, was founded in the mid-seventh century in association with Saint Philibert of Jumièges, who established several houses in the region. Austrebertha became abbess of Pavilly and is remembered as its principal early superior. Under her government the community followed a Benedictine form of life. The best-known miracle attached to her abbacy concerns a wolf that killed the donkey used to haul stone or timber for the monastery; Austrebertha ordered the wolf to perform the donkey’s labour, and the animal submitted and served the nuns. The story, whatever its historical kernel, was long repeated in Normandy as a sign of her sanctity and of the peace of the cloister.

Austrebertha died at Pavilly on 10 February, according to tradition in 704, and was buried in her abbey. A cult developed at her tomb, and she became the titular saint of the house and of the neighbouring settlement that still bears the name Saint-Austreberthe. Her feast is observed on 10 February. Because she died centuries before the papacy reserved canonization to itself, she was honoured as a saint by episcopal and popular recognition rather than by a named papal bull. The historical Austrebertha remains an obscure figure whose biography cannot be reconstructed in detail from seventh-century documents; what can be said with caution is that a noblewoman of Artois became a nun under the influence of the circle of Saint Omer and ended her life as abbess of Pavilly, where she was venerated from the early Middle Ages onward.
