Biography

Short Description

Austromoine (also known as Austremonius, Austremoine, or Stremonius) is venerated as the first bishop of Clermont in the Auvergne, in Roman Gaul. He belongs to the traditional group of seven missionaries later called the apostles of Gaul. Nothing reliable is known of his birth, family, or early life; the historical notices begin only with his association with the church of Clermont (then Augustonemetum) in the third century. His name and cult are firmly local to the Massif Central, and later medieval writers greatly expanded a very thin early record.

The chief early witness is Gregory of Tours, writing in the sixth century. In the History of the Franks, Gregory states that Pope Fabian sent seven bishops from Rome to preach in Gaul in the mid-third century, in the consulship of Decius and Gratus: Gatianus to Tours, Trophimus to Arles, Paul to Narbonne, Saturninus to Toulouse, Denis to Paris, Martial to Limoges, and Austromoine to Clermont. Modern historians treat this as a later schematic tradition rather than a precisely documented Roman mission, and they note that the foundation dates of several of these sees remain debated. Gregory’s account nevertheless fixed Austromoine in the episcopal memory of Clermont and in the religious identity of the Auvergne.

Within that tradition Austromoine is credited with organizing the first Christian community among the Arverni and with establishing the see that later became the diocese of Clermont. No contemporary writings by him survive, and no authentic acts of his episcopate are known. Tenth-century and later vitae added disciples, miracles, and anachronistic claims that he had been a companion of the apostles or a convert of the first century. Those legends have no support in Gregory or in any other early source. Gregory ranked him among the confessors, not among the martyrs.

Gregory records that Austromoine was buried at the vicus of Issoire (Iciodorum), south of Clermont. A later vita recast him as a martyr beheaded at Issoire, a story generally regarded as hagiographic expansion. The tomb at Issoire became the centre of his cult, and the Romanesque abbey church of Saint-Austremoine was later built on the site. Relics attributed to him were translated at various times to other churches in the region, including Volvic. His feast is kept on 1 November. The cult remained essentially regional: he is remembered as the apostle of the Auvergne and as founder of the see of Clermont, not as a figure of universal legend.
