Biography

Short Description

Aymard of Cluny, known in Latin as Aymardus and sometimes rendered Aimard, was the third abbot of the Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy. He succeeded Odo of Cluny after Odo’s death in November 942. Reliable sources do not record the year or place of his birth. Later Cluniac tradition describes him as of noble family and as a monk already formed in the observance of Cluny before his election. The monastery had been founded in 910 by William I, Duke of Aquitaine, who placed it under Abbot Berno and granted it unusual independence from local secular and episcopal control, placing it under the apostles Peter and Paul and, ultimately, papal protection. By the time Aymard took office, Cluny was becoming a leading center of Benedictine reform in the West Frankish lands, marked by a demanding liturgical life and a growing landed endowment.

As abbot, Aymard was remembered less for the wide reforming journeys that had taken Odo to other houses in France and Italy than for the internal government of Cluny itself. Cluniac tradition presents him as a capable steward of the abbey’s property, discipline, and daily observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict. Under his leadership the community continued to receive donations and to consolidate its estates. He is characterized as personally modest and simple in manner, in keeping with monastic ideals, even while he held one of the most important abbatial offices of the tenth century. Charter evidence from the period attests him as abbot, but he left no substantial body of writings of his own.

In the latter part of his abbacy Aymard lost his sight, which made the practical direction of a large and expanding monastery increasingly difficult. In 954 he asked the monks to elect a coadjutor, and they chose Majolus (Mayeul), a monk of intellectual distinction who would succeed him in effective rule and later be venerated as a saint. Aymard then withdrew from active government and remained at Cluny as a blind senior. Lives of Majolus composed in the following generation preserve an anecdote that the former abbot, no longer in power, once complained of the fare or wine given to ordinary monks, and that Majolus answered with humility and saw that Aymard was properly cared for. The story was told to illustrate both the human situation of a retired superior and the patience of his successor.

Aymard died at Cluny in 965 and was buried at the abbey. Benedictine and Cluniac calendars have commemorated him as a saint, commonly on 5 October, though he was not the object of a later medieval papal canonization and his cult remained essentially monastic and local. Historical knowledge of him is limited: the narrative of his life depends on Cluniac house tradition and on the richer biographies of his predecessor Odo and his successor Majolus. He occupies a clear place in the early succession of Cluniac abbots—Berno, Odo, Aymard, Majolus, Odilo, and Hugh—through whom Cluny became the most influential monastery of tenth- and eleventh-century Western Europe. Beyond that succession and the outline of his administration, blindness, resignation, and death, the surviving record is sparse, and his early years remain unknown.
