Biography

Short Description

Marie-Azélie Guérin, known as Zélie, was born on 23 December 1831 at Saint-Denis-sur-Sarthon in the Orne department of Normandy, France, the daughter of Isidore Guérin, a former soldier who later served as a gendarme, and Louise-Jeanne Macé. Raised in a devout Catholic household, she received a practical education and as a young woman sought admission to the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul at Alençon. The superior declined her application, reportedly on grounds of health, and she turned instead to the skilled trade of Point d’Alençon lace. She established her own successful lace-making enterprise, employing outworkers and managing the business with notable energy and commercial ability in a period when such independent female entrepreneurship was uncommon in provincial France.

In July 1858 she married Louis Martin, a watchmaker and jeweler of Alençon who had himself once hoped to enter monastic life. The couple at first intended a Josephite, celibate marriage, but after some months a confessor directed them toward ordinary married life. They had nine children, of whom four died in infancy or early childhood; the five daughters who survived to adulthood—Marie, Pauline, Léonie, Céline, and Thérèse—all later entered religious life. Zélie combined the demands of a growing household with the direction of her lace business, while Louis eventually sold his own shop in order to assist her. Their correspondence and the later testimony of their daughters depict a home of regular prayer, charity toward the poor, and close parental attention, lived amid the ordinary strains of nineteenth-century Norman town life.

Zélie was a prolific letter-writer; many of her letters to her brother Isidore Guérin, a pharmacist in Lisieux, and to her daughters survive and form a principal source for her inner life and daily concerns. In the mid-1870s she developed breast cancer. After a period of worsening illness and unsuccessful treatment she died at Alençon on 28 August 1877, at the age of forty-five. Louis then moved with the surviving children to Lisieux to be near Zélie’s family. Their youngest child, Marie Françoise-Thérèse, entered the Carmel of Lisieux and became Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, one of the most widely venerated saints of the modern Church. Zélie’s remains were later transferred from Alençon to Lisieux so that the couple might rest together.

Devotion to Louis and Zélie Martin grew in the twentieth century, especially in connection with the cult of their daughter Thérèse. They were beatified on 19 October 2008 under Pope Benedict XVI and canonized by Pope Francis on 18 October 2015, the first spouses in the history of the Catholic Church to be raised to the altars together as a couple rather than as martyrs. Their liturgical memorial is kept on 12 July. They are invoked as patrons of married couples, parents, families, and those who have lost children.
