Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Saint Babylas, known in some linguistic traditions as Babyle, was Bishop of Antioch in the mid-third century and is venerated as a martyr by both Eastern and Western churches. Virtually nothing can be established about his birth, family, or early career from contemporary records. He appears in the historical tradition as the successor of Zebinus in the see of Antioch, with his episcopate commonly dated from the later 230s until his death in the Decian persecution. Antioch was then one of the principal cities of the Roman East and an early centre of Christianity; its bishop ranked among the most influential prelates of the Greek-speaking church.

The principal early witness is Eusebius of Caesarea, who reports that Babylas died in prison, still wearing his chains, during the persecution initiated by the emperor Decius around 250. Later writers, including John Chrysostom in homilies delivered at Antioch, developed a more dramatic narrative: Babylas was said to have barred an emperor from entering the church until the ruler performed penance for a grave crime, an act presented as a model of episcopal independence. The identity of the emperor in this story is inconsistent across sources and may blend memory of Philip the Arab with the later Decian crisis. Hagiography also associates Babylas with three youthful companions, often named Urban, Prilidian, and Epolonius, who suffered with him or were spiritually formed by him; their cult was joined to his from an early date.

After his death Babylas was buried at Antioch. In the fourth century Bishop Meletius translated the relics to a martyrium at Daphne, near the famous temple of Apollo. When the emperor Julian visited Daphne in 362, the silence of the oracle was blamed on the presence of the Christian saint; Julian ordered the remains removed, after which a fire damaged the temple, an event Christians interpreted as miraculous. The relics were subsequently brought back to Antioch. In later centuries fragments were claimed by churches in the Latin West as well as the East. Babylas thus became not only a local Antiochene martyr but a figure in the wider contest between Christianity and the last pagan revival.

His feast is observed on 24 January in the Roman Martyrology and on 4 September in the Byzantine tradition, with additional local commemorations. He is included in traditional lists of the Bishops and Patriarchs of Antioch. Beyond the outline preserved by Eusebius and the homiletic and legendary elaborations of the fourth century, the details of his life remain obscure. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a bishop of Antioch named Babylas died as a confessor or martyr in the mid-third century, that his memory was cultivated with particular intensity in Syria, and that his relics and feast played a notable role in the Christian topography and calendar of Antioch.
