Biography

Short Description

Saint Bademus (also known in some traditions as Vadim) was a fourth-century Christian abbot and martyr of Sasanian Persia. The principal account of his life is hagiographical rather than documentary, and it is preserved in the Roman Martyrology and in later compilations such as Alban Butler’s Lives of the Saints. Those sources describe him as a wealthy man of noble standing and a citizen of Bethlapeta (Beth Lapat, later Gundeshapur) in Khuzestan, in the southwestern part of the Sasanian Empire. From his own resources he founded a monastery near that city and governed it as abbot, directing a community of monks in a life of austerity. No reliable source records the year of his birth, the names of his parents, or any details of his education or early career before he established the monastery.

His arrest belongs to the long persecution of Christians under King Shapur II (Sapor), which is generally dated from about 339 or 340 until the king’s death in 379. That campaign was among the most severe in the history of the Church of the East and was bound up with Sasanian–Roman warfare and with official suspicion that Persian Christians sympathized with Christian Rome. According to the traditional narrative, in the thirty-sixth year of the persecution Bademus was seized together with seven of his monks. They were confined in a harsh dungeon, loaded with shackles, and held for four months. Bademus is said to have been repeatedly tortured during that imprisonment and to have remained steadfast, encouraging his companions not to apostatize.

The same tradition names as the immediate agent of his death a man called Nersan (or Narses), of royal blood, who had been a Christian and had apostatized. Shapur, seeking to test or to confirm that apostasy, ordered Nersan to kill the imprisoned abbot. After hesitation, Nersan struck Bademus with a sword; the martyr is said to have received several blows before he died. Later martyrologists equated this death with 10 April 376. Christians are reported to have recovered the body in secret; the place of burial is not recorded. Some of the monks arrested with Bademus were put to death at a later date; others are said to have remained in prison until the persecution eased after Shapur’s death, in the reign of Hormizd.

Independent contemporary evidence for these events is lacking, and secular Sasanian sources do not mention Bademus by name. What can be affirmed with caution is that he stands in the larger, well-attested history of Persian Christian monasticism and of the martyrs of Shapur II’s reign. He was not a bishop, patriarch, or pope. His cult is ancient rather than the product of a modern papal canonization or beatification. He is commemorated as a martyr in the Roman Martyrology on 10 April; some Eastern calendars note him on 9 April. No historically secure list of patronages is attached to his name.
