Biography

Short Description

Bahubali, also known as Gommateshwara, is a major figure of Jain religious tradition, honoured for extreme asceticism and for attaining omniscience after prolonged motionless meditation. Jain scriptures, notably the ninth-century Sanskrit Adipurana of the Digambara author Jinasena, present him as a son of Rishabhanatha (Adinatha), the first Tirthankara of the present descending time-cycle, and of queen Sunanda. In that narrative Rishabhanatha had a hundred sons: the eldest, Bharata, born of queen Sumangala, became a chakravartin, while Bahubali received the kingdom of Podanapura. Jain cosmology places these events in a remote prehistoric age. No independent contemporary evidence establishes Bahubali as a person of recorded history, and no historically verified year of birth or death exists. He is not a Tirthankara; tradition ranks him as a kevalin, one who attained kevala jnana (omniscience).

After Rishabhanatha’s renunciation, Bharata sought universal sovereignty and demanded that his brothers acknowledge him. Most entered the ascetic life. Bahubali refused. To avoid a destructive war, counsellors arranged three non-lethal contests—a staring match, a water contest, and wrestling—which Bahubali won. At the point of striking his brother he is said to have been seized by disgust at violence and pride. He gave up the kingdom, adopted the life of a sky-clad Jain monk, and practised kayotsarga, the standing posture of meditation, for a year. Tradition describes creepers, anthills, and vegetation growing around his immobile body. Jain authors explain that residual ego—often the thought that he still stood on land associated with his brother, or pride in the severity of his penance—delayed enlightenment. When that obstacle fell away, he attained kevala jnana. In Digambara belief he later attained moksha, liberation from rebirth. There is no historically documented burial, tomb, or death-place in the ordinary sense.

Bahubali is especially prominent in the Digambara tradition, whose iconography shows him nude, upright, with creepers twining about the legs and arms, in kayotsarga. The most famous image is the colossal monolithic granite statue at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district, Karnataka, India, about seventeen metres high, commissioned by the Western Ganga minister Chamundaraya and consecrated in the late tenth century (commonly dated to 981 or 983 CE). It is the focus of the Mahamastakabhisheka, a grand anointing held at intervals of about twelve years. Other large Bahubali images stand at Karkala, Venur, Dharmasthala, and elsewhere in southern India. Svetambara sources also recount his story, though the nude colossi are a Digambara hallmark. Devotion to Bahubali belongs to Jain hagiography and sacred geography rather than to a reconstructable biography with verified civil dates, spouse, children, or burial. His legend has been retold in Sanskrit, Kannada, and other languages, and Shravanabelagola remains one of Jainism’s principal pilgrimage sites.
