Biography

Short Description

Bajrangdas Bapa was a Hindu sant of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat in western India, belonging to the large class of twentieth-century regional holy men whose reputations rest on personal charisma, Hanuman bhakti, and the later institutional work of disciples rather than on medieval textual canons. Scholarly, independent documentation of his life is limited. Nearly all circulating biographies originate in ashram literature, commemorative volumes, and oral tradition rather than in contemporary administrative archives or critical historical monographs. He should not be confused with other Indian religious figures who bear similar names, nor with earlier sadhus named Bajrangdas.

According to the tradition of his followers, he was born in Bhadrod, a village in the Mahuva taluka of Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, in a Brahmin family. The same sources commonly give his date of birth as 8 November 1903, corresponding to Kartik in Vikram Samvat 1960, and state that he showed a religious disposition in childhood. He is said to have left the householder’s path and taken up the life of a celibate sadhu, receiving a name associated with Bajrangbali (Hanuman). Names of parents and the precise sequence of his early wanderings appear in hagiographic pamphlets but are not confirmed by contemporary public records available to general historical inquiry, and should therefore be treated with caution.

His public religious career is placed in Gujarat, especially Saurashtra, where he is credited with tapasya, the founding or revitalizing of Hanuman shrines, and the gathering of a lay following. Teaching attributed to him emphasizes devotion, simple living, vegetarianism, and service. As with many modern sants, miracle stories—healings, protection of devotees, and extraordinary knowledge—circulate in popular memory; these belong to the genre of hagiography and are not historically demonstrated. He did not found a large, tightly organized sampradaya on the scale of the Swaminarayan movement, but temples and ashrams linked to his name continued after his death.

Traditional accounts place his death on 30 January 1977. A samadhi and associated institutions in Gujarat have since served as centers of remembrance. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office; he was not beatified or canonized by any Christian church; and he has no universally fixed feast day in a liturgical calendar. Patronage in the Catholic sense is not recorded. His significance is that of a local Hindu saint whose cult illustrates the vitality of sant devotion in modern Gujarat. Veneration remains concentrated among Gujarati Hindus and visitors to the ashrams that claim his legacy. A careful historical treatment must distinguish the well-attested fact of a twentieth-century Gujarati Hanuman-bhakta sadhu remembered as Bajrangdas Bapa from uncritical acceptance of every date, miracle, and genealogical detail found in devotee publications.
