Biography

Short Description

Saint Balbina, also called Balbina of Rome, is venerated in the Latin Church as a virgin martyr of the early Roman community. She is traditionally assigned to the second century, in the period associated with the emperor Hadrian, but no contemporary document records the year of her birth or death. Almost everything that later ages told about her life is drawn from the so-called Acts of Pope Alexander I, Eventius, and Theodulus, a hagiographical text that modern historians regard as legendary rather than historical. The Roman Martyrology nevertheless commemorates her on 31 March as a virgin, daughter of the martyr Quirinus, baptized by Pope Alexander, who after a life of virginity was buried on the Appian Way near her father. An ancient cemetery on that road was known as the coemeterium Balbinae, and an early titular church on the Aventine Hill still bears her name, which together show that a cult of a saint called Balbina existed in Rome from late antiquity.

In the traditional narrative Balbina was the daughter of Quirinus, a Roman tribune who, according to the same legendary Acts, was the jailer of Pope Alexander I. Through the pope’s preaching Quirinus and his household were converted. Balbina herself is said to have suffered from a disfiguring swelling of the neck or throat, later described as a goitre or scrofulous disease. Alexander directed her to seek the chains that had bound the Apostle Peter; when she found them and kissed them she was healed. In thanksgiving she consecrated her virginity to God. After her father’s martyrdom she too was put to death for the Christian faith, though the Acts do not describe the manner of her execution in any reliable detail. The story of the miraculous healing later became the basis for popular invocation of Balbina against scrofula, goitre, and other ailments of the throat and glands.

Her body was said to have been laid in the cemetery of Praetextatus on the Via Appia, beside that of Quirinus. In subsequent centuries relics associated with her were kept in the church of Santa Balbina all’Aventino, an ancient titulus that tradition sometimes linked with her family house. The church remains a cardinalatial title. Balbina was never a member of a later religious order, and the sources uniformly present her as an unmarried consecrated virgin with no children. No papal bull of canonization or beatification in the medieval or modern sense is recorded; her veneration belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational cult of Roman martyrs. While the biographical particulars cannot be verified historically, the persistence of her name in the martyrology, in the toponymy of a cemetery, and in a Roman titular church is the principal evidence for her place in early Christian memory.
