Biography

Baldassarre Ravaschieri, whose name also appears as Baldassare Ravaschieri and Baldassarre da Chiavari, was born in 1420 in Chiavari, a Ligurian port then subject to the Republic of Genoa. He came from the Ravaschieri, a noble family of the Chiavari district. The fifteenth century in Liguria and Lombardy saw the rapid growth of the Franciscan Observance, a reform within the Order of Friars Minor that insisted on stricter poverty, itinerant popular preaching, and the moral conversion of urban society. Ravaschieri entered this Observant branch of the Franciscans and was ordained a priest. The exact house of his novitiate and the year of his religious profession are not established with certainty in the surviving record.

As a friar and priest he worked as a preacher in northern Italy, above all in Liguria and in the territories of the Duchy of Milan. The Observants of his time continued the pastoral program associated with Bernardino of Siena and Giovanni da Capestrano: devotion to the Holy Name, opposition to usury and civic discord, and care for the poor. Later tradition describes Ravaschieri as austere, humble, and faithful to the reformed Franciscan rule. He acquired a reputation for holiness during his lifetime. Reports of miracles of healing and of other extraordinary graces are found in the later cultic accounts prepared for Roman recognition; they cannot be confirmed from independent contemporary documents and should be treated as part of the hagiographical tradition rather than as established historical fact.

In his final years he lived at the Observant Franciscan convent in Binasco, south of Milan in the Duchy of Milan. He died there on 17 October 1492. The date is consistently given in Franciscan and local tradition. After his death a cult formed around his tomb and persisted in the region for centuries, as was common for Observant Franciscan figures of the Italian Quattrocento whose fame remained largely local.

The Holy See did not complete a full canonization process in the early modern period. On 8 January 1930 Pope Pius XI confirmed the immemorial cultus of Baldassarre Ravaschieri, an act that under the canonical practice of the time constituted beatification. He is therefore venerated as Blessed. His feast is observed on 17 October, the day of his death. He was never canonized. Standard martyrologies do not assign him a wide range of official patronages. Biographical information remains limited; modern notices depend largely on the documentation assembled for the 1930 confirmation of cult and on local Franciscan chronicles rather than on a dense contemporary archival dossier.
