Biography

Short Description

Balsamus of Cava, known in Italian as Balsamo di Cava and usually commemorated as Blessed Balsamo, was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity at Cava de' Tirreni in Campania, in southern Italy, in the early thirteenth century. The house he governed had been founded in the eleventh century by Saint Alferius Pappacarbone and had already become one of the principal Benedictine abbeys of the Mezzogiorno, with a distinctive succession of abbots later honoured as saints or blesseds. No reliable medieval source preserves the year of Balsamus’s birth, nor a securely documented birthplace or family origin; later notices simply attach him to Cava and to its monastic community. His date of birth must therefore be left unknown, and it should not be confused with the year in which he took office as abbot.

He entered the Benedictine community of Cava and lived under the Rule of Saint Benedict before being elected abbot in 1208, succeeding Blessed Peter II. His abbacy lasted until 1232, a tenure of about twenty-four years. In that period the abbey remained both a centre of regular monastic life and a substantial ecclesiastical lordship, administering dependent churches, priories, and estates in Campania and neighbouring districts. The abbot’s duties therefore combined the spiritual government of the monks with the temporal administration of a major religious house. Monastic tradition presents Balsamus as a diligent and devout superior who maintained observance; he is not recorded as a protagonist of the high politics of the Hohenstaufen Kingdom of Sicily, though the abbey necessarily existed within that world during the reign of Emperor Frederick II.

Balsamus died at the abbey on 24 November 1232 and was buried there, in keeping with the custom of abbots who died in office at Cava. The date of his death became the date of his liturgical feast. He was not the subject of a medieval papal canonization of the kind later regularized by the Congregation of Rites; like several other thirteenth-century abbots of Cava he was venerated locally as blessed, and his memory was kept in the abbey and in the surrounding church of Cava. As a professed Benedictine and abbot he lived under monastic vows and is not documented as having had a spouse or children.

Beyond this outline the surviving evidence is thin. Unlike the earliest abbots of Cava, who are the subject of a comparatively rich eleventh- and twelfth-century hagiographical tradition, Balsamus appears mainly in abbatial catalogues, necrologies, and brief later notices. No substantial contemporary vita is known, and specific miracle cycles or defined patronages are not securely attested in early sources. He belongs to the series of Benedictine superiors who sustained the institutional and religious life of La Trinità della Cava in the thirteenth century and who were afterwards remembered as holy men by their own community, rather than to the small group of universally documented medieval saints whose lives can be reconstructed in close detail.
