Biography

Short Description

Baltasar Pardal Vidal was a Roman Catholic diocesan priest from Galicia in northwestern Spain whose life and ministry unfolded across the first two-thirds of the twentieth century. He was born in the coastal town of Vilagarcía de Arousa in the province of Pontevedra. Surviving accounts provide few particulars about his family origins or childhood. He received his ecclesiastical formation in the seminary system of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela and was ordained to the priesthood in the early twentieth century. Remaining a member of the secular clergy rather than entering a religious order, he exercised ordinary pastoral duties while developing a specialized apostolate.

The work for which Pardal Vidal is principally remembered is the promotion of the devotion of the Three Hail Marys (in Spanish, las Tres Avemarías). This simple practice of reciting three Hail Marys daily, often morning and evening, had earlier advocates in the Catholic tradition, including Saint Leonard of Port Maurice and Saint Alphonsus Liguori. Pardal Vidal presented it as an easy, powerful prayer that ordinary Catholics could offer for the grace of purity, for protection in temptation, and for the conversion of sinners. Devotional literature associates him with the establishment or vigorous expansion of an apostolate called the Work of the Three Hail Marys. He spread the practice through preaching, printed materials, and personal encouragement at a time when Spanish Catholicism combined intense popular Marian piety with the severe trials of the Second Republic, the Civil War, and the postwar period.

In addition to oral preaching, Pardal Vidal composed writings that explained the theological and spiritual rationale of the Three Hail Marys and urged its adoption. These texts placed the devotion within the wider current of twentieth-century Marian spirituality, which was also influenced by the apparitions at Fatima in 1917. Beyond this focused activity, publicly available historical sources yield little detailed information about his successive pastoral assignments, any teaching or administrative posts he may have held, or his personal conduct during the religious persecution of the 1930s. He did not become a bishop, nor did he occupy any patriarchal see.

Pardal Vidal died in 1963. He has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church, and therefore he possesses no feast day in the general Roman calendar and no officially recognized patronages. His memory continues chiefly among practitioners of the Three Hail Marys devotion and in local Galician Catholic memory. Because he remains an obscure figure outside those circles, numerous biographical facts—including the exact place of death, the site of burial, and a full chronology of his life—cannot be confirmed from widely accessible, reliable historical references. What can be affirmed is that he was a Galician priest of the Latin Church whose enduring historical trace is the encouragement of a traditional Marian prayer among the faithful of his time and region.
