Biography

Short Description

John the Baptist was a Jewish preacher and prophet active in the early first century in the Jordan Valley and the adjoining territories of Judea and Perea. The principal narrative of his origins is found in the Gospel of Luke, which presents him as the son of Zechariah, a priest belonging to the division of Abijah who served in the Jerusalem Temple, and of Elizabeth, described as a descendant of Aaron and a relative of Mary the mother of Jesus. Luke recounts that the angel Gabriel announced the conception to the elderly and childless Zechariah during his Temple service, that the child was to be named John, and that he would be filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb and would go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah. The same Gospel places his birth in a town in the hill country of Judea, records his circumcision on the eighth day, and states that he lived in the wilderness until the day of his manifestation to Israel. No contemporary non-Christian source confirms the details of his parentage or infancy, and the New Testament does not name a specific birthplace.

In adulthood John appeared in the wilderness of Judea preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins and drawing large crowds to the Jordan River. The Gospels depict him as an ascetic who wore a garment of camel hair with a leather belt and whose food was locusts and wild honey, imagery that associates him with the prophet Elijah. He called hearers to ethical conversion, warning of coming judgment and instructing tax collectors and soldiers in just conduct. According to the New Testament he baptized Jesus of Nazareth and, in the Fourth Gospel, identified him as the Lamb of God. A distinct group of disciples remained attached to John even after Jesus began his own ministry. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, writing in the late first century, independently attests that John was a good man who exhorted the Jews to cultivate virtue and piety and to come to baptism, which Josephus interprets as a purification of the body after the soul had already been cleansed by righteousness. Josephus adds that Herod Antipas feared that John’s eloquence and popularity might lead to sedition.

John publicly denounced the marriage of Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee and Perea, to Herodias, who had previously been the wife of Herod’s half-brother. The Synoptic Gospels present this denunciation as the cause of John’s arrest and of his subsequent execution: at a banquet, Herodias’s daughter (unnamed in the Gospels and later called Salome in tradition) obtained, at her mother’s prompting, the head of John on a platter. Josephus locates the imprisonment and death at the fortress of Machaerus, east of the Dead Sea, and emphasizes political fear rather than the banquet story. The Gospels report that John’s disciples took the body and laid it in a tomb. Later Christian writers developed competing traditions about the burial of the body at Sebaste in Samaria and about the subsequent history of the head, claimed by churches in Damascus, Rome, Amiens, and elsewhere; these relic traditions cannot be verified from first-century evidence.

Christian veneration of John as the Forerunner or Precursor of Christ is attested from the earliest centuries and is among the most widespread cults in both East and West. His nativity is kept on 24 June and his beheading on 29 August in the Roman calendar; Eastern churches also observe related commemorations, including the Synaxis of John the Baptist. He is honored as the last of the prophets of Israel and as the one who inaugurated the baptismal practice that the Church continued. Because his cult long predates the medieval and modern processes of beatification and canonization, he was never formally canonized by a pope. He is invoked as patron of baptism and of converts, of the Knights Hospitaller (the Order of Saint John), of numerous cities including Florence, Genoa, and Turin, of Puerto Rico and of French Canada, and of various trades such as tailors and farriers, as well as against epilepsy and hail.
