Biography

Short Description

Baptista Mantuanus, known in Italian as Battista Spagnoli and in religion as Baptista Mantuanus, was born on 17 April 1447 in Mantua. His father Pietro was a Spanish nobleman attached to the Gonzaga court, and the family was therefore called Spagnoli. After early studies in Mantua he attended the University of Padua, absorbing the humanist curriculum of Latin letters and philosophy. In 1463 he took the Carmelite habit in the observant congregation centered at Mantua, a reform group that had separated in practice from the wider, more relaxed Carmelite provinces. He was ordained and began a life that combined conventual observance, teaching, and an extraordinary output of Latin verse.

His literary fame rested above all on the ten eclogues of the Adolescentia, first printed in the 1490s and reprinted scores of times. These pastoral poems treated love, conversion, the vices of the Roman Curia, and the religious life in a style modeled on Virgil, and they became a standard school text from England to Poland. He also wrote the Parthenice Mariana, an epic on the Virgin Mary, together with similar poems on Saint Catherine, Saint Lucy, Saint Agatha, and Saint Margaret; a collection of silvae and elegies; hymns; and an unfinished Fasti. In prose he composed treatises on patience, on the religious state, and on the misfortunes of his age. Erasmus ranked him among the foremost Christian poets of the day and referred to him as the Christian Virgil. His verse was admired for its fluency and moral earnestness even when later critics found it uneven.

In the Carmelite order he was a principal architect of the Mantuan reform. He was elected vicar general of the congregation on six occasions and visited houses to enforce poverty, study, and liturgical regularity. His reputation for learning and piety led the general chapter of 1513 to choose him as prior general of the whole order, a post he occupied until 1516. During these years the Fifth Lateran Council was in session; Mantuanus supported efforts at church reform from within the existing structures. He remained closely tied to Mantua and to the Gonzaga family, to whom he dedicated various works, while corresponding with humanists in Florence, Venice, and beyond.

He died in Mantua on 20 March 1516. His poems continued to be printed and commented upon throughout the sixteenth century, serving both Catholic educators and, in some cases, Protestant schoolmasters who valued their Latinity and moral content. Interest in him as a poet waned after the Baroque period, but the Carmelites preserved his memory as a blessed of the order. Pope Leo XIII confirmed his cult by beatification in 1885. He stands as a characteristic figure of late Italian humanism: a religious who used classical forms to serve Christian and reformist ends, and a superior who tried to renew his order on the eve of the Protestant Reformation.
