Biography

Short Description

Barbara Cho Chŭng-i (Korean: 조증이 바르바라; also romanized Cho Chung-i or Cho Jeung-i) was a Korean Catholic laywoman and martyr of the nineteenth century, counted among the 103 Martyr Saints of Korea. She was born in 1782 in Seoul, in the Joseon kingdom, at a time when the Catholic faith—first received in Korea in the late eighteenth century chiefly through lay Confucian scholars who had encountered Christian books in China—was still without a resident hierarchy and was treated by the state as an illegal, socially subversive teaching. Korean Catholics of her generation gathered in secret household communities, often for long periods without priests, and depended on catechists, memorized doctrine, and occasional contacts with the Church in Beijing. Cho Chŭng-i belonged to that capital-city Catholic world. Surviving notices class her as a married laywoman rather than as a member of any religious order; Korean Catholicism in this era was overwhelmingly a lay movement, and adult women among the later canonized martyrs were typically wives living in ordinary households.

The relative lull that followed earlier outbreaks of persecution ended with the Gihae persecution of 1839, begun under the regency of Queen Sunwon. Royal and local officials in Seoul and the provinces arrested large numbers of Catholics, seized religious books and objects, and pressed prisoners to recant, to trample a crucifix, and to name other believers. Those who refused were subjected to beating, strangulation, or public beheading. Cho Chŭng-i was among those taken in the capital. Interrogation records and the later beatification acts, which for most of the Korean lay martyrs are brief, present her as having held to the faith under torture. She was put to death in Seoul in 1839, at about fifty-seven years of age. Executions of the 1839 group commonly took place at sites associated with the capital’s western gates and nearby execution grounds. As with many of her companions, no securely identified individual tomb is recorded; bodies were often abandoned or buried hastily, and later relic collections at Korean martyr shrines are not, in the standard hagiographic sources, tied to her by name.

Her death belonged to the same wave of killings that claimed dozens of other lay men and women in 1839–1840, before the still more famous martyrdoms of the first Korean priest, Andrew Kim Taegon, in 1846, and of the large group who died in the Byeongin persecution of 1866. The Holy See recognized the 1839 martyrs in stages. Pope Pius XI beatified seventy-nine of them, including the Gihae victims, on 5 July 1925. Further Korean martyrs of 1846 and 1866 were beatified later. All 103 were canonized together by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, during an apostolic visit—the first such canonization ceremony held outside Rome in modern times. The Church keeps their collective liturgical feast on 20 September.

Beyond that group identity, independent documentation of Cho Chŭng-i’s family life, the name of her husband, whether she had children, and any particular patronages attached to her alone remains sparse. What can be said with confidence rests on the Korean Church’s compiled notices for the beatification process, on the pattern of the 1839 Seoul executions, and on her consistent listing among the canonized laywomen of the Gihae persecution. She is venerated as one of the 103 Martyr Saints of Korea, not as the subject of a large separate cult or of well-attested individual legends.
