Biography

Short Description

Barbara Han A-gi was a Korean Catholic laywoman who suffered martyrdom in the nineteenth century and is venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church among the 103 Korean Martyrs. She was born in 1792 in Seoul, in the kingdom of Joseon. Catholicism had reached Korea in the late eighteenth century through Chinese Catholic books and the initiative of Korean Confucian scholars, forming a largely lay-led community long before foreign missionaries could enter the country in a sustained way. The Joseon state, committed to Neo-Confucian orthodoxy, banned the new religion as heterodox and as a challenge to ancestral ritual and social hierarchy. Successive edicts and campaigns of repression followed, and Catholics lived under the constant threat of denunciation, imprisonment, and death.

Han A-gi was a married woman who practiced her faith as a member of this underground Church. Surviving notices of her life are brief, as is typical for many of the Korean lay martyrs whose stories were preserved mainly in interrogation records, letters of missionaries, and later compilations by the Korean Catholic community. In a society in which household heads were held responsible for the religious conduct of their families, a married Catholic woman’s perseverance could endanger her entire household. The Gihae persecution of 1839, named for the year in the traditional calendar, was among the bloodiest of these campaigns. It unfolded in the capital and the provinces after a change in court politics and claimed the lives of Korean believers as well as of French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, including Bishop Laurent Imbert.

Arrested in Seoul during this persecution, Barbara Han A-gi was interrogated and subjected to the tortures customarily used to obtain apostasy, including severe beatings. She refused to renounce Christianity. According to the tradition received by the Church, she died in prison in Seoul on 24 May 1839 from the effects of torture and confinement, rather than by public execution. Her death formed part of a larger harvest of martyrdoms in the capital that year, in which men and women, married and unmarried, nobles and commoners, were put to death or perished in jail for the same profession of faith.

Pope Pius XI beatified a group of seventy-nine Korean martyrs, including those who died in the 1839 persecution, on 5 July 1925. Pope John Paul II canonized the 103 Korean Martyrs, among them Barbara Han A-gi, Andrew Kim Taegon, and Paul Chong Hasang, on 6 May 1984 in Seoul. Their collective liturgical memorial is observed on 20 September. Individual biographical detail about Han A-gi remains limited; she is known above all through her place in this company of martyrs and through the witness of fidelity unto death that the Korean Church has remembered and celebrated since the nineteenth century.
