Biography
Maria Barbara Maix was born on 27 June 1818 in Vienna, then capital of the Austrian Empire, into a poor working family. From youth she combined wage labour with a life of prayer and practical charity. Employed as a domestic servant in Vienna, she used what little she earned to help the poor, the sick, and abandoned children, and she drew other young women into the same service. Her spirituality was marked by devotion to the Eucharist and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
In the 1840s this circle took on a more stable community form under the patronage of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, becoming the nucleus of a future religious congregation. The Revolutions of 1848 made it impossible to continue the project in Austria. Maix and a small group of companions therefore left Europe and reached Rio de Janeiro in 1848. On 8 May 1849 the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was formally established in Brazil. She took the religious name Maria Barbara of the Most Holy Trinity and led the sisters in the education of poor girls and in care of the sick and elderly. The community lived in severe poverty and soon extended its work, especially in southern Brazil.
The foundress met prolonged trials: material want, misunderstanding from some clergy, and internal tensions that at times removed her from leadership of her own congregation and left her in isolation. She spent her last years in obscurity in Rio de Janeiro, remaining faithful to prayer, penance, and the original charism of service to the poorest. She died in that city on 17 March 1873.
Her spiritual daughters preserved her memory and promoted her cause. After she was declared Venerable, Pope Benedict XVI approved a miracle attributed to her intercession. She was beatified on 6 November 2010 in a ceremony held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and is venerated as Blessed Barbara Maix, foundress of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
