Biography

Short Description

Barbara Yi Chŏng-hŭi was a Korean Catholic laywoman martyred in the nineteenth century and later numbered among the 103 Martyrs of Korea. She was born in 1825 in Korea, then under the Joseon dynasty, into a Catholic family. The Church in Korea at that period was unusual in having been founded and sustained largely by laypeople; foreign clergy arrived only intermittently, and for many years communities survived through household catechesis and clandestine practice. Her mother was Magdalene Kim Ŏ-bi and her older sister was Magdalene Yi Yŏng-hŭi; both women were arrested with her and are likewise venerated as saints. Catholicism had been treated by the Joseon state as a dangerous heterodoxy, in part because Christians refused ancestral rites that officials regarded as civic and familial duty.

Hagiographical notices compiled for her cause describe Barbara as quiet, obedient, and devout, and as a girl who wished to remain a virgin consecrated to God. She was still in her early teens when the Kihae persecution of 1839 struck the Catholic community. That campaign was one of several major nineteenth-century efforts to extirpate Christianity through denunciation, imprisonment, torture, and public execution. Barbara, her mother, and her sister were seized and held in Seoul. Interrogators sought to compel them to deny the faith; the tradition preserved by the Church records that they refused.

On 3 September 1839 Barbara was beheaded at the Small West Gate (Seosomun) in Seoul, at about fourteen years of age. Magdalene Kim and Magdalene Yi were put to death in the same group of women. Seosomun was a principal execution ground for Catholics in the capital, and many of those later canonized died there. Individual burial places of the 1839 victims are in most cases not securely documented; bodies were often abandoned or recovered only in secret by fellow believers.

Barbara Yi Chŏng-hŭi was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925, among the Korean martyrs of the 1839–1846 persecutions, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, together with Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and their companions. The Catholic Church keeps their collective feast on 20 September. She is remembered as a young lay virgin-martyr whose briefly recorded life belongs to the family-centered witness of the early Korean Church.
