Biography

Short Description

Barbara Yi (Korean: 이 바르바라) was a Korean Roman Catholic laywoman and martyr, numbered among the 103 Korean Martyr Saints. She was born in 1825 in Seoul, in the Joseon kingdom. By that date Catholicism had been present in Korea for roughly four decades. It had entered the country not through a resident foreign mission but through Korean scholars who encountered Catholic books in China, baptized one another, and formed household communities. The Joseon state treated the new religion as a threat to Confucian ritual order, above all to ancestral rites, and had already carried out a major suppression in 1801. Barbara belonged to the second or third generation of Korean Catholics who received the faith inside family networks in and around the capital, at a time when clergy were scarce or absent and lay leadership was decisive.

The Gihae persecution opened in 1839, during the reign of King Heonjong, while Queen Dowager Sunwon acted as regent. Edicts ordered the arrest of Catholics, the seizure of religious objects, and the use of torture to force recantation. Joseon criminal procedure commonly employed flogging, compression or twisting of the limbs, and long confinement in crowded jails. Barbara Yi, still an adolescent, was taken up in this campaign. Later Roman inquiries, drawing on letters of French missionaries, on Korean official records, and on testimony from survivors, presented her as having refused to deny the faith or to perform the ritual acts demanded of prisoners. Individual childhood detail—education, daily occupation, the exact composition of her household—is thinly documented in published sources, which is typical for many of the younger lay martyrs whose lives were recorded chiefly in connection with their arrest and death.

On 3 September 1839 she was executed by beheading in Seoul, at the ground associated with the Small West Gate (Seosomun), a site used repeatedly that year for the killing of Catholics. She was about fourteen by ordinary Western reckoning (fifteen by traditional Korean age count). The same season saw further group executions of lay men, women, and adolescents. Relatives and fellow believers sometimes recovered bodies at night for burial; Barbara Yi’s precise resting place is not independently established in readily available historical literature. She is remembered as a virgin martyr and is not recorded as having married or had children.

The Holy See examined the Korean martyrdoms in the early twentieth century. On 5 July 1925 Pope Pius XI beatified seventy-nine martyrs of the persecutions of 1839 and 1846, a group that included Barbara Yi. After the later beatification of additional martyrs of 1866, Pope John Paul II canonized all 103 together on 6 May 1984, at an outdoor Mass in Seoul during his first pastoral visit to Korea, the first such canonization ceremony held outside Rome in the modern period. Their collective liturgical commemoration was fixed at 20 September in the General Roman Calendar, under the title of Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and companions. Barbara Yi has no widely published individual patronages apart from that group cult. What the Church formally recognized in her case is baptismal fidelity unto death within the nineteenth-century Korean Catholic community.
