Biography

Short Description

Saint Barbatianus, known in Italian as San Barbaziano, was a priest and confessor of the fifth century whose cult is centered on Ravenna, then the imperial capital of the Western Roman Empire. Contemporary fifth-century documents do not describe his life; what is known comes chiefly from a later medieval Vita Sancti Barbatiani and from liturgical commemoration in the Roman Martyrology. Tradition holds that he was a native of Antioch in Syria who travelled west to Italy and first lived as a priest in Rome, where he gained a reputation for holiness and for miraculous healings. The historical kernel is modest: a holy priest attached to the Ravennate court in the age of Galla Placidia is plausible, even if later legend supplied an Eastern origin and a cycle of wonders.

Hagiography links him closely to Galla Placidia, Augusta and mother of the emperor Valentinian III. According to the legendary Life, the empress suffered from a long-standing hemorrhage and was cured when Barbatianus made the sign of the cross over her, an episode clearly shaped by the Gospel story of the woman with the issue of blood. In thanksgiving she is said to have invited him from Rome to Ravenna and to have provided him with a cell or small religious house adjoining the church of Saint John the Baptist. There he served as her confessor and as a spiritual counsellor at the imperial court. Further miracles of healing and of deliverance from evil spirits were later attributed to him in Ravenna; these stories cannot be confirmed by contemporary sources and belong to the conventional repertoire of medieval saintly biography.

He died at Ravenna in the mid-fifth century. Later calendars often give the year as about 449, close to the death of Galla Placidia herself in 450. He was buried in the church of San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist) in Ravenna, which became the principal site of his tomb and of local veneration. The Roman Martyrology records him on 31 December as a priest and confessor of Ravenna, and that date remains his feast day. His cult was always essentially local. Relics associated with him remained at Ravenna; in the later Middle Ages some were claimed or translated elsewhere in Italy, including in connection with a church of San Barbaziano at Bologna that no longer stands.

Barbatianus was never formally canonized according to the papal procedures that developed in the later Middle Ages; he belongs to the large number of early confessors whose cult grew from local memory and liturgical celebration. He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. The sources present him as a celibate priest living a quasi-eremitical life under imperial patronage, without mention of a spouse or children. He has not acquired a distinctive set of specialized patronages beyond his place in the local sanctoral of Ravenna and a few other Italian churches. Modern historical judgment treats the Antiochene origin and the miracle cycle as legendary accretions, while accepting as reasonable the existence of a priest of that name in fifth-century Ravenna associated with the circle of Galla Placidia.
