Biography

Short Description

Saint Barlaam of Antioch was a Christian martyr of the early fourth century, commemorated in both the Latin and Greek churches. Reliable ancient testimony for his cult comes above all from Saint John Chrysostom, who preached a homily in his honour, and from the Roman Martyrology, which places his passion at Antioch. Later tradition, followed by standard modern notices such as the Catholic Encyclopedia, assigns his death to the Great Persecution under Diocletian, conventionally to the year 304. He is described as a humble, unlettered man from the countryside near Antioch in Roman Syria, not as a cleric, monk, or holder of any ecclesiastical office. Nothing verifiable is known of his parents, birth year, marriage, or children.

The episode that defines his passio, already alluded to by Chrysostom, concerns the last device used against him after other torments had failed. The magistrate had burning incense placed upon Barlaam’s open palm and the hand held over a pagan altar, so that pain would force him to flinch and drop the incense, thereby seeming to offer sacrifice to the gods. Barlaam kept the hand motionless until the flesh was consumed, choosing to let it be burned away rather than appear to commit idolatry. Chrysostom presents this as a wisdom greater than that of the philosophers: an unlettered peasant had outwitted the tyrant by the wisdom of Christ. The same core story is repeated in later synaxaria and menologia, sometimes with rhetorical expansion but without adding independently verifiable biographical fact.

He must be distinguished from several other figures of the same name. He is not the hermit Barlaam of the medieval romance of Barlaam and Josaphat, a Christianized recasting of the life of the Buddha. He is not Barlaam of Calabria, the fourteenth-century Italo-Greek scholar and opponent of Palamite theology. He is likewise distinct from the medieval Russian abbots Barlaam of Kiev, first hegumen of the Kiev Caves, and Barlaam of Khutyn. Ancient homiletic evidence also includes a homily of Saint Basil of Caesarea on a martyr Barlaam; whether Basil’s subject is identical with the Antiochene martyr or represents a related Cappadocian commemoration is not settled, but the Latin martyrological tradition firmly locates the passion at Antioch.

His cult is therefore ancient rather than the product of a later formal process. No record survives of a papal canonization or beatification; he belongs to the pre-congregational saints whose veneration was established by public cult in late antiquity. The Roman Martyrology keeps his feast on 19 November; some Eastern calendars note him on 16 or 19 November. No reliable source records his burial place, translation of relics, or any specific patronage of places, professions, or causes. What can be said with caution is that a Syrian peasant martyr, already preached by Chrysostom in the fourth century, was remembered for a single, striking refusal to let even an involuntary gesture be counted as sacrifice, and that this memory was stable enough to enter both Eastern and Western calendars.
