Biography

Short Description

Barlaam of Chikoy, known in the world as Vasily Fedotovich Nadezhin, was a Russian Orthodox hermit, hieromonk, and missionary of the nineteenth century whose life was bound to the Chikoy Mountains of Transbaikalia, in eastern Siberia near the Mongolian border. He was born in 1774 in the village of Mareevo, in the Kresttsy district of Novgorod Governorate in the Russian Empire, to a peasant family. In early adulthood he worked in trade and spent a period in Saint Petersburg. In 1811 he left European Russia for Siberia. He lived for a time in Irkutsk and in Kyakhta, the Russian trading post on the Chinese frontier, before withdrawing from commercial life in search of solitude and prayer.

By the 1820s he had settled as a hermit in the forested Chikoy Range south of Lake Baikal. The district was remote, sparsely populated, and religiously mixed, with Orthodox settlers, Old Believers, and Buryat and Mongol communities. His austere way of life drew disciples, and a small skete grew up around his cell. In 1828 he was tonsured a monk with the name Barlaam by Bishop Michael of Irkutsk. He was subsequently ordained a hieromonk and became the spiritual head of the community. A church dedicated to the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist was erected, and the skete was in time recognized as a monastery, known as the Chikoy John the Baptist Monastery. Barlaam is regarded as its founder and first superior.

Accounts of his life describe him as a strict ascetic, given to fasting, long night vigils, and the reception of pilgrims and the poor. He also engaged in missionary activity among the indigenous Buryat population and sought to confirm Orthodox practice among Russian settlers while addressing the strong presence of Old Belief in the Chikoy valley. The monastery served as a spiritual center on a difficult frontier, far from the older monastic heartlands of Russia. Precise archival documentation of every episode in his life is limited, and much of what is repeated about miracles and inner struggles belongs to later hagiographical tradition; the outline of his career as merchant, hermit, monk, and abbot is, however, well established in Orthodox sources.

Barlaam died on 23 January 1846 at the monastery he had founded and was buried there. Local veneration began after his death. The Russian Orthodox Church numbers him among the saints of Siberia; his principal feast is 23 January, the day of his repose, and he is also commemorated on 10 June with other Siberian saints. In the twentieth century the monastery was closed under Soviet rule. In the post-Soviet period his relics were uncovered and interest in restoring the Chikoy monastery revived. He remains a representative figure of Siberian Orthodox monasticism in the first half of the nineteenth century, illustrating the movement of Russian ascetics into the Transbaikal wilderness and the attempt to plant monastic life on the empire’s far eastern frontier.
