Biography

Short Description

Bartholomew of Simeri, known in Italian as Bartolomeo da Simeri and in German as Bartholomäus von Simeri, was an Italo-Greek monk, priest, and abbot of the Byzantine-rite monastic tradition in southern Italy. He was born in Simeri in Calabria during the eleventh century; no reliable source records an exact year of birth. Calabria then still had a substantial Greek-speaking Christian population and a network of Basilian monasteries, even as Norman conquest replaced remaining Byzantine political authority. Later hagiography, based chiefly on a Greek life composed in the community he founded, presents him as leaving secular society to live as a hermit before gathering disciples. Independent documentation of his family, education, or the precise chronology of his early years is lacking, and anecdotal details in the vita cannot be confirmed from other evidence.

After his eremitical period, Bartholomew established the monastery of Santa Maria Nuova Odigitria, commonly called the Patirion or Santa Maria del Patir, in the wooded hills near Rossano in northeastern Calabria. The house followed the Rule of Saint Basil and the liturgy of Constantinople. Norman patrons associated with the counts of Sicily supported the foundation, which took shape in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. Bartholomew became its first abbot; the popular name Patir derives from the Greek pater, reflecting his role as spiritual father of the community. The monastery developed into one of the principal centers of Greek monasticism, liturgy, and manuscript culture in medieval Calabria.

In order to obtain liturgical books, sacred vessels, relics, and formal privileges, Bartholomew traveled to Constantinople. According to the monastic tradition, Emperor Alexios I Komnenos and the patriarch of Constantinople—Nicholas III Grammatikos is the patriarch usually identified—received him and granted gifts and recognition. An icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria was associated with this embassy and with the monastery’s dedication. The journey shows that Calabrian Greek monks continued to look to the Byzantine capital for spiritual and institutional legitimacy even after the Norman political takeover of southern Italy.

Bartholomew remained at the head of the Patir until his death, which the tradition of his community places on 19 August 1130. He was buried at the monastery near Rossano. His disciples carried the Italo-Greek monastic observance further; shortly after his death, King Roger II of Sicily founded the archimandritate of San Salvatore in Messina, whose first archimandrite, Luke, is described as a spiritual son of Bartholomew. Bartholomew’s cult arose in the monastic and local churches of Calabria. He is commemorated as a saint on 19 August in the Roman Martyrology and in Byzantine-rite calendars. He was not the subject of a modern papal canonization process; his sainthood rests on medieval local veneration later accepted in the wider church. The historical record for his life remains limited to the Greek vita and related notices.
