Biography

Short Description

Bartholomew Chŏng Mun-ho was a Korean Catholic layman and catechist of the nineteenth century and is venerated as one of the 103 Martyrs of Korea. He was born in Hongju, in Chungcheong Province of the Joseon kingdom, in the early nineteenth century, and is generally described as belonging to a family of some social standing. Catholicism had entered Korea in the late eighteenth century largely through lay initiative and remained a prohibited religion, subject to repeated state persecutions. Chŏng encountered the faith as an adult, received baptism taking the Christian name Bartholomew, and thereafter lived as a committed member of the underground Church. Sources present him as a man of means, often described as a prosperous farmer, who used his resources to support fellow Catholics and to instruct others in Christian doctrine.

In the Korean Church of his generation the shortage of clergy meant that lay catechists carried much of the work of teaching, baptizing in danger of death, and holding communities together between rare visits by missionaries. Chŏng Mun-ho is remembered in that role. The Church in Joseon at mid-century was still small, scattered, and periodically devastated by arrests; the Gihae persecution of 1839 and the executions of 1846, including that of the first Korean priest Andrew Kim Taegŏn, formed the living memory of his community. Devotion, secrecy, and willingness to face death were ordinary conditions of Catholic life. Precise details of Chŏng’s family circumstances are sparsely recorded in the materials commonly available, and it is not possible from those sources to document with certainty the names of a spouse or children.

The Byeongin persecution of 1866, triggered in part by the presence of French missionaries and by Joseon’s isolationist policy under the regent Heungseon Daewongun, brought a new and extensive wave of executions. French bishops and priests were put to death, and Korean Catholics were hunted in the provinces and in the capital. Chŏng Mun-ho was arrested in the course of that persecution. He was taken to Seoul, interrogated, and tortured in an effort to make him recant and to obtain information about other believers. He refused to apostatize. Condemned to death, he was beheaded at the Saenamteo execution ground on the Han River in Seoul on 23 December 1866, together with several other Korean lay Catholics. Saenamteo was one of the principal martyrdom sites of that year.

Chŏng Mun-ho’s cause was advanced with those of other Korean martyrs of the nineteenth century. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on 6 October 1968, in a group of twenty-four martyrs added to those already beatified in 1925, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, during the pope’s first pastoral visit to Korea, as one of the 103 Martyrs of Korea. The Catholic Church keeps their collective feast on 20 September. Individually he is a comparatively little-documented figure beside better-known companions such as Andrew Kim Taegŏn and Paul Chŏng Hasang; the historical record preserves the outline of his social origin, his work as a catechist, the place and date of his execution, and his place in the canonized company, while leaving many personal particulars unknown.
