Biography

Short Description

Bartholomew of Braga, known in Portuguese as Bartolomeu dos Mártires, was born Bartolomeu Fernandes in Lisbon on 3 May 1514, in the parish of Santa Maria dos Mártires, from which he later took his religious name. His parents were Domingos Fernandes and Maria Correia. At about the age of fourteen he entered the Dominican convent of São Domingos in Lisbon. After profession and studies in philosophy and theology in the Order of Preachers, he was ordained and spent years teaching theology in Dominican houses, including at Batalha. He gained a reputation for Thomist learning, personal austerity, and preaching in the sixteenth-century Iberian Dominican tradition.

In 1559 King Sebastian of Portugal nominated him Archbishop of Braga, the primatial see of the kingdom; Pope Pius IV confirmed the appointment. Reluctant to leave conventual life, he accepted out of obedience. He took part in the third period of the Council of Trent (1562–1563), speaking in favor of episcopal residence, clerical reform, and seminaries. Returning to Portugal he applied the conciliar decrees with unusual energy: he made long pastoral visitations across a large and often difficult archdiocese, founded a seminary at Braga, promoted catechesis among clergy and people, and lived in personal poverty while assisting the poor and the sick, including during plague. He declined a cardinalate offered by Pope Pius V and refused translation to richer sees.

His principal writings include a Portuguese catechism and the Latin treatise Stimulus Pastorum, a practical handbook for bishops that circulated widely as a companion to Tridentine reform. After more than two decades as archbishop he resigned the see in 1582 and withdrew to the Dominican convent of Santa Cruz at Viana do Castelo, where he lived in simplicity. He died there on 16 July 1590 and was buried in the convent church.

Local devotion continued in northern Portugal. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 4 November 2001 and canonized by Pope Francis on 5 July 2019 by equivalent canonization. His liturgical memorial is kept on 16 July. He is remembered above all as a model reforming bishop of the Catholic Reformation.
