Biography

Short Description

Bartolomé Ximénez (the surname also appears in later Spanish orthography as Jiménez) is a poorly documented historical figure. The Wikidata identifier Q21515160 does not correspond to an article in major biographical dictionaries, the Catholic Encyclopedia, standard episcopal catalogues, or widely cited martyrologies that would permit verification of a birth year, death year, or precise places of origin and burial. The combination of the given name Bartolomé with the patronymic Ximénez was borne by a number of Spanish and Spanish-American churchmen between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, so unique identification is not possible from published sources alone without risk of conflating distinct individuals.

No evidence places this person among the Bishops of Rome or among the patriarchs and catholicoi of the Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, or Church of the East traditions. He therefore held neither papal nor patriarchal office. Likewise, the Roman Martyrology and the great Bollandist collections do not record an established cult, an official feast day, recognized patronages, or an act of beatification or canonization under this name. Local or unpublished devotion, if it existed, has not entered the universal calendar or standard hagiographical reference works.

The older spelling Ximénez is characteristic of early-modern Iberian documents, in which the letter x represented the sound later written j, but that orthographic detail does not by itself establish a century of activity, still less a year of birth. It is especially important not to mistake the year of an ecclesiastical appointment—such as the taking of a bishopric, priory, or other office—for a year of birth. Family circumstances, including any spouse or children, are unattested in accessible reliable literature; while many clergy of the Hispanic world were celibate secular priests or members of mendicant or monastic orders, no specific religious profession can be confirmed for this individual.

In short, Bartolomé Ximénez belongs to the large cohort of incompletely documented Catholic clerics of the Spanish-speaking world whose lives remain largely in unpublished diocesan, order, or notarial archives. A fuller biography would require targeted archival research rather than synthesis from already printed historical literature. The present notice therefore records only what can be stated with caution and leaves all unverified fields empty.
