Biography
Bartolomea Capitanio was born on 13 January 1807 in Lovere, a town on Lake Iseo in the province of Bergamo in northern Italy. She grew up in a modest merchant household; her father, Modesto Capitanio, worked as a trader. From childhood she showed a marked inclination toward prayer, catechesis, and service to the poor. She was educated by the Poor Clare sisters in Lovere, who formed her in both letters and a serious spiritual life. Even as a young woman she began teaching girls of the town, especially those whose families could not afford schooling, and she organized works of charity among the sick and needy.
In the late 1820s she entered into a close collaboration with Caterina Gerosa, a well-to-do unmarried woman of Lovere who shared her desire to found a stable work of charity and education. Inspired by the example of Saint Vincent de Paul, the two women planned a community of sisters dedicated to the instruction of girls, the care of the sick, and assistance to the poor. On 21 November 1832 they began common life in a house provided by Gerosa in Lovere, thus founding the Institute of the Sisters of Charity, later known as the Sisters of Charity of Saints Bartolomea Capitanio and Vincenza Gerosa and popularly called the Sisters of Maria Bambina because of their devotion to the Infant Mary. Bartolomea served as the first superior and spiritual guide of the tiny community.
Her health had long been delicate, and she was afflicted with tuberculosis. Only eight months after the foundation she died in Lovere on 26 July 1833, at the age of twenty-six. Caterina Gerosa, who took the religious name Vincenza, assumed leadership of the institute and guided its early expansion. The congregation later received diocesan and pontifical approval and spread throughout Italy and eventually to other countries, remaining dedicated to education, healthcare, and social works among the poor.
Bartolomea Capitanio was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 30 May 1926 and canonized by Pope Pius XII on 18 May 1950, on the same day as Vincenza Gerosa. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 26 July. She is remembered as a young foundress whose brief life combined intense interior prayer with practical charity, and whose institute continues her work in many parts of the world.
