Biography

Short Description

Bartolomeo Aiutamicristo da Pisa was a Camaldolese lay brother of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, venerated as blessed in Camaldolese and local Pisan tradition. He was born in Pisa, then a major Tuscan maritime commune. His family name has not been preserved. The byname Aiutamicristo (“Help me, Christ”) came from his habit of repeating that short invocation throughout the day as a prayer of trust. Almost nothing reliable is known of his childhood or secular occupation before he entered religion.

He joined the Camaldolese monastery of San Michele in Borgo, on the Arno in Pisa, as a converse (lay brother) rather than as a choir monk or priest. The Camaldolese congregation, a Benedictine reform founded by Saint Romuald in the early eleventh century, combined community life with eremitical elements; by Bartolomeo’s time it had several houses in Tuscany. Lay brothers supported the choir through manual work while following a simpler horarium. Bartolomeo is remembered for taking the humblest tasks—kitchen, garden, and domestic service—with cheerfulness, silence, and recollection.

Sparse later notices stress his humility, prompt obedience, and spirit of prayer rather than visions, writings, or public office. He acquired a reputation for holiness already in life, typical of many medieval monastic blesseds whose fame remained largely intramural. No substantial contemporary vita survives; what is known depends on Camaldolese tradition and brief martyrological entries.

He died at the monastery in 1224, traditionally on 28 January, and was buried in the church of San Michele in Borgo. Local devotion followed, and he came to be honored as blessed, especially among the Camaldolese, who commemorate him on 28 January. There is no record of a modern papal canonization or of a specific decree of beatification; his cult belongs to the older pattern of monastic and diocesan veneration. No widely attested patronages are attached to his name.

His historical footprint is therefore modest. He stands as an example of the hidden lay-brother vocation in medieval Italian monasticism rather than as a figure documented by charters, letters, or a full medieval biography. Later hagiographic summaries repeat the same few facts: Pisan origin, the distinctive nickname, Camaldolese life at San Michele in Borgo, death in 1224, and burial in the monastery church.
