Biography
Bartolomeo Cerveri was born in 1420 at Savigliano in Piedmont, in northwestern Italy, then under the House of Savoy. He entered the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) at the convent of his native town. After religious formation and studies in philosophy and theology he was ordained a priest. Dominican tradition presents him as austere in life and as a preacher who worked in the towns and countryside of Piedmont. Surviving accounts of his youth and education are brief and largely hagiographical; they do not preserve a detailed independent biography.
In the mid-fifteenth century he was appointed inquisitor for Piedmont. The office required him to investigate and proceed against persons and groups accused of heresy, above all communities identified with the Waldensians, who remained established in parts of the Alpine valleys and adjacent districts. His duties took him on journeys through the province. The same sources that record his appointment agree that this work made him enemies among those he pursued, though they give few names or documentary particulars beyond the later martyrdom narratives.
On 21 April 1466, while traveling in the neighborhood of Cervere in the present-day province of Cuneo, Cerveri was ambushed and killed. Later narratives state that a small group of assailants attacked him with blades and that he died of his wounds. The Dominicans and the local faithful regarded the killing as martyrdom suffered in the exercise of his inquisitorial office. His body was taken to Savigliano and buried in the Dominican church of San Domenico.
A cult of veneration grew around his tomb in Piedmont. On 22 September 1853 Pope Pius IX confirmed the centuries-old cultus, an act treated as equivalent to beatification. Blessed Bartolomeo Cerveri is commemorated on 21 April, the anniversary of his death. He is especially venerated in Savigliano and at Cervere, the place associated with his martyrdom. He was never the subject of a separate formal canonization, and details of his early life and of the precise circumstances of the ambush remain sparsely documented outside Dominican and local liturgical sources.
