Biography

Short Description

Basil Fool for Christ, known in Russian as Vasily Blazhenny and also called Basil the Blessed or Basil, Wonderworker of Moscow, was a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of the most famous examples of the yurodivy, or fool for Christ. Traditional accounts place his birth in December 1468 in the village of Yelokhovo, then outside Moscow in the Grand Duchy of Moscow and now within the city. His parents, named Jacob and Anna in the hagiography, were pious peasants. As a boy he was apprenticed to a cobbler. The earliest well-known story of his spiritual insight concerns a merchant who ordered boots that would last for many years. The young Basil wept and said that the customer would die the following morning and would have no need of them. When the prophecy proved true, those around him began to regard him as gifted with foresight.

Around the age of sixteen he abandoned ordinary work and adopted the life of a holy fool in Moscow, a form of extreme asceticism in which the saint feigns madness, endures mockery, and speaks uncomfortable truths. For many decades he walked the streets poorly clad or naked even in the depths of winter, sometimes wearing iron chains. He spoke in riddles, laughed at the powerful, and used shocking gestures as a kind of enacted sermon. Hagiographical sources say that he overturned the wares of dishonest merchants, threw stones at the houses of people reputed to be virtuous in order to drive away demons that, he claimed, lurked at their doors, and kissed the walls of the houses of public sinners because angels could not enter and waited outside. In this way he attacked hypocrisy and called the city to repentance. He lived by alms and slept in the open or in porches.

Later tradition credits him with predicting the catastrophic fire of Moscow in 1547 and with other acts of clairvoyance. One widely repeated story tells that at a feast given by Tsar Ivan IV he three times dashed a cup of wine against the window. When the tsar grew angry, Basil explained that he was putting out a fire in Novgorod. Messengers later reported that a fire had indeed broken out there and had been extinguished at the corresponding times. Such tales, whether strictly historical or shaped by later piety, established his reputation as a wonderworker who saw what was hidden and who could not be silenced by rank.

Basil's relationship with Ivan IV, later known as Ivan the Terrible, is central to his legend. He is said to have rebuked the tsar for failing to pay attention during the Divine Liturgy, for cruelty, and for entertaining thoughts of constructing a palace on the Sparrow Hills while he stood in church. Ivan both feared and honored him. The holy fool's freedom of speech, protected by his assumed madness and by popular veneration, allowed him to say what courtiers could not. When Basil died, tradition holds that the tsar himself, together with the boyars, carried the coffin. He was buried at the Trinity Church on Red Square.

Ivan subsequently ordered the erection, on that site, of the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, built in the 1550s and thereafter popularly called Saint Basil's Cathedral because the saint's tomb lay within it. A chapel was later raised over the grave. Basil was canonized in 1588 by Patriarch Job of Moscow in the reign of Tsar Feodor I. His principal feast day is 2 August. The year of his death is given as 1552 in many sources and as 1557 in others, and almost all narrative detail derives from hagiography compiled after his death rather than from contemporary administrative records. Even so, he remains among the best-known Russian fools for Christ, a figure inseparably linked with Moscow and with the cathedral that bears his name.
