Biography

Short Description

Basil of Amasea, also called Basileus of Amasea, was bishop of Amasea in Pontus in Asia Minor (the site of modern Amasya in Turkey) in the early fourth century. He is venerated as a hieromartyr by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family, education, or the earlier years of his episcopate. The surviving portrait of his life depends on a Greek martyr-act (passio) and on brief later notices; these sources belong to the hagiographical tradition of late antiquity and must be used with caution. He held the see of Amasea during the reign of the emperor Licinius, in the last phase of imperial measures against Christians before Constantine’s victory in 324.

The traditional narrative of his death is bound up with a woman named Glaphyra, described as a Christian attendant of Constantia, sister of Constantine the Great and wife of Licinius. According to the passio, Licinius made advances to Glaphyra; she fled the court and took refuge in Amasea, where Bishop Basil received and sheltered her. When the emperor learned of her whereabouts he ordered Basil to surrender her. The bishop refused. Glaphyra is said to have died of natural causes before she could be seized, but Licinius nonetheless had Basil arrested. The story of Glaphyra cannot be independently verified and may contain legendary elements, yet it is the framework in which the church remembered Basil’s conflict with the imperial authorities.

Basil was taken from Amasea to Nicomedia, then an imperial residence in Bithynia. There he was examined, persisted in the Christian faith, and was condemned. He was beheaded, and his body was thrown into the sea. The faithful later recovered the body and brought it back to Amasea for burial; a church was built over the tomb. The martyrdom is conventionally dated to 322, in the closing years of Licinius’s persecution. Saint Athanasius of Alexandria is cited in later liturgical tradition as having mentioned Basil’s death among the bishops who suffered under Licinius, which helped to fix the cult at an early date. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him at Amasea in Pontus; Eastern calendars likewise keep his memory on 26 April (with the corresponding Julian date in churches that follow that calendar).

Beyond the martyr-act and the liturgical commemorations, little else is known. No authentic writings of Basil survive, and there is no reliable evidence concerning a spouse, children, or membership in a monastic community of the later type. Amasea was an ordinary episcopal see, not a patriarchal throne, and Basil was never Bishop of Rome. His cult is that of an early bishop-martyr recognized by popular and local veneration long before the later formal processes of beatification and canonization. The historical kernel is that a bishop of Amasea named Basil was put to death under Licinius and was thereafter honored at his see; the surrounding narrative of court intrigue and the recovery of relics remains the stuff of hagiography rather than of fully documented history.
