Biography

Short Description

Basil Zelentsov, known in the Russian Church as Bishop Vasily (Zelentsov) of Priluki, was a hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church who suffered martyrdom under Soviet rule and is numbered among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He was born Vasily Ivanovich Zelentsov on 24 March 1870 in the village of Zimarovo, in the Ranenburg district of Ryazan Governorate in the Russian Empire. His patronymic shows that his father was named Ivan; standard accounts describe the household as a clerical family, his father serving as a parish priest. He was educated in the church schools of the Ryazan region, completed the Ryazan Theological Seminary, and then studied at the Kiev Theological Academy, from which he graduated in 1896 with the degree of candidate of theology, the ordinary higher theological qualification of the imperial Russian Church.

In the following decades he worked as a teacher in theological schools, including institutions in Kiev, and became known as a diocesan missionary and Orthodox writer. His activity was associated especially with the Poltava diocese, where he took part in catechetical and anti-sectarian work typical of late imperial Russian missionary practice. He published theological and apologetic writings directed against unbelief and against dissenting religious movements. The collapse of the old regime in 1917 and the subsequent Civil War and Soviet anti-religious campaign transformed the conditions of church life. Zelentsov remained with the canonical Patriarchal Church and took a public stand against the Renovationist (Living Church) schism, which in the early 1920s enjoyed the favor of the Soviet authorities.

In the early 1920s he was ordained to the priesthood and served in the Poltava region. In 1925 he received monastic tonsure, retaining the name Basil (Vasily), and was consecrated Bishop of Priluki, a vicariate of the Poltava diocese (Priluki, or Pryluky, lies in what is now Ukraine). As a vicar bishop he was a relatively junior hierarch, but he was noted for firmness in doctrine and for refusal to accommodate either Renovationism or the state’s demand that the Church become an instrument of Soviet policy. Like many bishops of the patriarchal church in those years, he was repeatedly arrested, interrogated, and imprisoned or exiled by the Soviet security organs.

After a final arrest he was transferred to Moscow, condemned to death, and shot on 7 February 1930. The precise site of his burial has not been established; persons executed in Moscow in that period were commonly interred in unmarked mass graves. Because Soviet archives long remained closed, some earlier church calendars recorded his fate only in general terms as death in prison or exile; later research fixed the date and place of execution as 7 February 1930 in Moscow.

The Russian Orthodox Church glorified Bishop Basil as a hieromartyr at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of August 2000, together with a great host of New Martyrs and Confessors. He is commemorated on 7 February in the civil (Gregorian) calendar, corresponding to 25 January in the Julian calendar used for the liturgical year of the Russian Church, and also with the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He has not been assigned a widely publicized list of specific patronages in the manner of some medieval saints; his veneration is that of a confessor-bishop who died for the Orthodox faith in the twentieth century.
