Biography

Short Description

Saint Basiliscus was a Christian martyr of the early fourth century associated with the Roman province of Pontus in northern Asia Minor. The principal liturgical sources of both the Eastern Orthodox and Latin churches identify him as a soldier and as a relative, commonly described as a nephew, of Saint Theodore the Recruit, also known as Theodore of Amasea. Together with two fellow Christians named Eutropius and Cleonicus he was arrested during the persecutions that marked the later years of the Tetrarchy. The surviving passio names the emperor Maximian and a governor Agrippa among the authorities responsible. Eutropius and Cleonicus were put to death first, and their memory is kept on 3 March; Basiliscus remained in confinement at Amasea for a period thereafter.

According to the hagiographical narrative, the governor later ordered that Basiliscus be transferred from Amasea to Comana. On this journey he is said to have been forced to wear iron shoes pierced with nails and to have endured further cruelties, yet also to have performed wonders that impressed those who saw him. At Comana he refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods and was beheaded. A date of 308 is traditionally assigned to his death, although that year is conventional rather than independently attested in non-hagiographical records. A church was afterwards built over the place of his burial in Comana.

The shrine of Basiliscus at Comana is mentioned in connection with the last days of Saint John Chrysostom, who died in 407 while traveling in exile and was at first laid to rest near the martyr's church. Later Byzantine tradition related that Basiliscus appeared to Chrysostom in a vision shortly before the archbishop's death. The martyr's principal feast is observed on 22 May in Eastern Orthodox and Roman calendars; he is also commemorated with Eutropius and Cleonicus on 3 March. The Roman Martyrology records him on 22 May as a martyr of Comana in Pontus who suffered under Maximian and the governor Agrippa.

Beyond these liturgical and legendary notices, almost nothing can be verified about Basiliscus's birth, early life, or family circumstances. No reliable source supplies a year or place of birth, and there is no documentary evidence concerning a spouse or children. He is not known to have held episcopal, patriarchal, or monastic office; the sources present him as a soldier-martyr of the Pontic church. His cult was local to Pontus in late antiquity and was subsequently taken up into the wider calendars of East and West. The historical kernel that can be affirmed with caution is that of a Christian executed at Comana during the early-fourth-century persecutions in Asia Minor; the surrounding details of miracles, iron footwear, and kinship with Theodore belong to hagiographical tradition.
