Biography

Short Description

Bathildes, known in Latin as Bathildis and in English as Balthild or Bathild, was a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon woman who became queen of the Frankish kingdoms of Neustria and Burgundy and later a nun at Chelles. Near-contemporary hagiography states that she was born in England and that she was of high or even royal birth, though modern historians treat the royal claim with caution because such origins were a conventional feature of early medieval saints' lives. In her youth she was enslaved and taken across the Channel to Gaul, where she served in the household of Erchinoald, mayor of the palace of Neustria. Sources describe her as modest, capable, and devout. After Erchinoald's wife died he wished to marry Bathildes, but she refused him and hid until he took another wife.

She was then married to King Clovis II, most likely in the later 640s. The couple had three sons, Chlothar III, Childeric II, and Theuderic III, all of whom later occupied Frankish thrones. As queen, Bathildes used her influence in favor of monastic foundations and against simony and the trafficking of Christian slaves, a cause shaped by her own years in bondage. She and Clovis are credited with founding or richly endowing the monastery of Corbie in Picardy and with restoring and endowing the abbey of Chelles east of Paris; she also supported other houses, including Jumièges. After Clovis II died around 657, she governed as regent for the young Chlothar III, working with and at times against the Neustrian aristocracy and the mayors of the palace.

The regency combined generous ecclesiastical patronage with bitter political struggle. Later narrative sources, especially the Passion of Leodegar, portray her as responsible for the killing or persecution of several bishops, among them Aunemund of Lyon. Whether these accusations rest on fact or on partisan memory of court factions remains disputed among historians. By about the mid-660s Bathildes left public life, whether voluntarily or under pressure from the mayor Ebroin and the Neustrian elite, and entered the abbey of Chelles, which she had fostered. There she lived under the monastic rule, undertaking menial work and almsgiving. She died at Chelles on 30 January 680 and was buried in the abbey.

A life of Bathildes was written at Chelles soon after her death and circulated her reputation for humility, charity, and care for captives and the poor. Her cult took root at Chelles and spread in Francia and, later, in England. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 30 January. She belongs to the large number of early medieval saints whose veneration arose locally and was received into the martyrologies without a surviving record of formal papal canonization.
