Biography

Short Description

Beatrice of Nazareth, known in Dutch as Beatrijs van Nazareth, was a Cistercian nun and mystic of the thirteenth-century Low Countries and the earliest identified author of a prose treatise in the Dutch vernacular. She was born in Tienen (Tirlemont) in the Duchy of Brabant, conventionally dated to about 1200, into a family of urban standing. Her father, Bartholomew, later appears as a founder and benefactor of Cistercian houses. After the death of her mother, Bartholomew entrusted the young Beatrice, then about seven years of age, first to the Beguines of Zoutleeuw for elementary education and then to the Cistercian nuns of Bloemendaal (Florival). There she received instruction in Latin and in the customs of the Cistercian sisters, and she was formed in the liturgical and contemplative life that would shape her later writing.

In adolescence she entered the Cistercian novitiate, making profession in her mid-teens. She spent a period at the abbey of Maagdendaal (Val-des-Vierges) near Oplinter before being assigned, in the mid-1230s, to a newly established community dedicated to Our Lady of Nazareth, on a site near Lier in Brabant. Of that house she became prioress, an office she held until her death. Near-contemporary testimony presents her as occupied with the copying of books, the formation of younger nuns, and the ordinary round of Cistercian observance, while also undergoing severe illness and states of mystical absorption. She is reported to have kept a spiritual diary in the vernacular, later used by her biographer.

Her principal surviving work is the short Middle Dutch treatise Seven manieren van heilige minne (The Seven Manners of Holy Love). It describes seven modes in which the soul experiences divine love: from an initial attracted longing, through laborious service and the torment of desire, to an overwhelming and almost annihilating union, and finally to a more hidden, enduring love that returns the mystic to ordinary charity and community life. The text is notable for its psychological precision, its use of the mother tongue rather than Latin, and its independence from scholastic framing. It stands at the beginning of medieval Dutch mystical prose, in the same regional tradition later associated with Hadewijch and, in the following century, Jan van Ruusbroec, though Beatrice’s voice remains distinctly Cistercian and experiential.

A Latin Life, the Vita Beatricis, was composed soon after her death by a chaplain associated with Nazareth. It drew on her diary and on the memories of her sisters, and it includes a Latin version of the Seven Manners, together with accounts of rapture, a mystical wound of love, and prolonged physical suffering. Beatrice died at Nazareth in 1268 and was buried in her abbey. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization, but she has been venerated as Blessed in Cistercian and regional calendars, with a feast commonly observed on 29 July. The original abbey did not survive the religious wars of the sixteenth century, and no securely identified relics remain. Her historical importance rests less on a widespread cult than on her place in the beginnings of Dutch prose and in the mystical tradition of the medieval Low Countries.
