Biography

Short Description

Beatrice of Silva, born Beatriz da Silva y Meneses about 1424 in Campo Maior in the Alentejo of the Kingdom of Portugal, was a daughter of Rui Gomes da Silva, the first governor of Campo Maior after its reconquest from Muslim rule, and of Isabel de Menezes, a noblewoman linked to the counts of Portalegre. She came from a large aristocratic family; one brother, João de Menezes da Silva, later became the Franciscan reformer venerated as Blessed Amadeus of Portugal. In 1447 she went to Castile as a lady-in-waiting when Isabel of Portugal married King John II of Castile. At court she was noted for beauty and piety and did not marry.

Later hagiographical tradition holds that Queen Isabel grew jealous and confined Beatrice in a cramped, darkened chamber. During that imprisonment she is said to have received a vision of the Virgin Mary, who consoled her and told her to found a religious order in honor of the Immaculate Conception, whose nuns would wear white with a blue mantle. She was eventually released and left the court for good.

She took shelter in the Dominican monastery of Santo Domingo el Real in Toledo and lived there in retirement for some three decades, apparently without solemn Dominican profession. In 1484 Queen Isabella I of Castile granted her a royal property in Toledo so that she could begin the community she had long intended. With a few companions she founded the Order of the Immaculate Conception (the Conceptionists). Pope Innocent VIII gave the house initial approval in 1489, at first associating the nuns with Cistercian observance. After her death Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros had the order placed under Franciscan jurisdiction, with constitutions centered on devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Conception. The Conceptionists later spread through Spain, Portugal, and the Americas.

Beatrice died in Toledo in August 1492 and was buried in the monastery she had founded. Cult remained largely local until the twentieth century. She was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 28 July 1926 and canonized by Pope Paul VI on 3 April 1976. Her feast is kept on 17 August. She is invoked as patron of prisoners, a title tied to the tradition of her confinement at court, and as foundress and patron of the Conceptionist nuns.
