Biography

Short Description

Beatus of Lungern, also known as Beatus of Beatenberg and Beatus of Thun, is a saint of uncertain historicity who is venerated in Swiss tradition as the apostle of Switzerland. The written accounts of his life are legendary in character and were compiled many centuries after the period in which he is supposed to have lived. According to this tradition he was a native of Ireland or of Britain who embraced Christianity in the apostolic age. One strand of the legend states that he received baptism in England from the apostle Barnabas and later went to Rome, where Saint Peter ordained him and sent him to preach among the Helvetii.

The same tradition relates that Beatus traveled into the Alpine region of present-day Switzerland and took up the life of a hermit in a cave high above the northern shore of Lake Thun, in the area now associated with the village of Beatenberg in the canton of Bern. Hagiography describes the cave as the lair of a dragon, which the saint is said to have driven out or killed before making the place his hermitage. From this retreat he is believed to have evangelized the surrounding countryside. He is said to have died there at an advanced age. Later compilers assigned the year 112 for his death, a date that would place him in the first and second centuries; that chronology is not supported by contemporary evidence and is treated by historians as legendary. No reliable source records a birth year, a birthplace, or a historically attested year of death.

Devotion to Beatus is documented in the later Middle Ages. A sanctuary developed at the cave, which became a place of pilgrimage, and the nearby settlement came to bear his name as Beatenberg. In the sixteenth century, after the Reformation took hold in Bern, relics associated with the saint were removed from the cave church and taken to the still-Catholic village of Lungern in Obwalden. From this translation of relics derives the designation Beatus of Lungern. The cave complex, known as the St. Beatus Caves (St. Beatus-Höhlen), remains a well-known site on Lake Thun.

Modern scholarship generally regards Beatus as a legendary or at best obscure figure whose story may preserve a faint memory of early medieval missionary activity, possibly connected with Irish or other Insular monks, later recast in apostolic colors. No contemporary source confirms his existence. He is commemorated on 9 May. His cult belongs to the pre-congregation era of local veneration and was not the product of a formal papal canonization. He is honored as apostle of Switzerland and is especially associated with Beatenberg and Lungern.
