Biography

Short Description

Bellinus of Padua, known in Italian as Bellino di Padova or Bellino Bertaldi, was a bishop of Padua in the twelfth century who came to be venerated as a martyr and saint in the Catholic Church. Surviving sources do not record a precise year of birth. He is consistently described as a native of Padua, born into the noble Bertaldi (Bertaldo) family, almost certainly in the later eleventh century. Nothing reliable is known of his childhood, education, or the early stages of his ecclesiastical career before his elevation to the episcopate. In 1128 he became Bishop of Padua, a diocese whose temporal and spiritual authority extended over a substantial part of the Venetian mainland, including estates in the low-lying Polesine toward the Po delta.

His episcopate unfolded in a difficult period for the northern Italian Church. The Investiture Controversy had been formally settled by the Concordat of Worms in 1122, but bishops still faced the task of reclaiming rights and properties that lay lords had seized during decades of conflict, and of imposing a more regular discipline on the clergy in line with Gregorian reform. Later accounts present Bellinus as a prelate who took that program seriously: he sought to restore alienated church lands and tithes and to correct abuses among his clergy. Such policies inevitably created enemies among local magnates who had profited from ecclesiastical property. The Paduan church also possessed interests in the Polesine, a region of mixed and shifting jurisdiction, which would prove fateful for the bishop.

According to the tradition preserved in medieval and early modern hagiography, Bellinus was murdered on 26 November 1147 at Fratta (the later Fratta Polesine) in the Polesine. He is said to have been struck down by two assassins. The motive given in the later sources is revenge or the removal of an obstacle: a nobleman whose occupation of church property the bishop had challenged is alleged to have hired the killers. Because he died while defending the rights of his church, Bellinus was honored as a martyr. Independent documentary corroboration of every narrative detail is lacking, as is often the case for twelfth-century Italian episcopal vitae, but the date of death, the identification of Fratta as the place, and the violent character of his end are the stable core of the tradition.

Veneration of Bellinus took root especially in the Polesine rather than only in Padua itself. The settlement that grew around the site of his cult received the name San Bellino; a sanctuary there became the principal shrine, and his relics have been preserved in that church. He is the patron saint of the town of San Bellino in the present province of Rovigo. His feast is observed on 26 November. Like many locally venerated bishop-martyrs of the central Middle Ages, he was not the subject of a formal canonization process of the later papal type; his cult arose from popular and diocesan devotion and was received into the wider liturgical tradition of the Catholic Church. Historical knowledge of his life remains modest and depends heavily on hagiographical texts written after his death, which mix a plausible outline of a reforming twelfth-century bishop with pious elaboration.
