Biography

Short Description

Bellinus, also known as Bellino Bertaldi or Bellinus of Padua, was a twelfth-century bishop of Padua in northern Italy who came to be venerated as a martyr in the Latin Church. He belonged to the Bertaldi family, a lineage associated with Padua. No reliable year of birth has been preserved in the surviving sources, and almost nothing can be verified about his youth, education, or early clerical career. He is generally held to have taken possession of the see of Padua around 1128 and to have governed it until his death in 1147. Padua in this period formed part of the complex political landscape of the March of Verona and the Kingdom of Italy within the Holy Roman Empire, and its bishops were major territorial lords as well as spiritual pastors.

During his episcopate Bellinus is remembered in later Paduan and Venetian tradition as a prelate who defended the rights and property of his church against secular encroachment and who sought to uphold clerical discipline. The decades after the Concordat of Worms still saw frequent disputes in northern Italy over ecclesiastical lands, tithes, and jurisdiction, as communes and noble families expanded their power. Hagiographical accounts present Bellinus as having made enemies among local magnates by resisting such claims. Independent twelfth-century narrative sources for his administration are sparse, so the details of particular lawsuits or reforms cannot be reconstructed with certainty, but the outline of a bishop in conflict with lay interests is consistent with the wider history of the Italian episcopate in his century.

According to the tradition of his cult, Bellinus was assassinated on 26 November 1147 while traveling in the Polesine, the low-lying country of the Adige and Po delta south of Padua, in what is now the province of Rovigo. The murder is attributed to hired killers acting for a noble whose interests the bishop had opposed. The site of his death became a focus of local devotion. The settlement later known as San Bellino in the Polesine took its name from him, and his relics have been kept in the parish church there. He is honored as the patron of that town. His feast is observed on 26 November.

Formal papal canonization in the later medieval sense is not clearly documented for Bellinus; his recognition as a saint rests on long-standing local veneration in the Veneto, later reflected in liturgical calendars and in the naming of the commune of San Bellino. Historical knowledge of his life remains limited to his office as bishop of Padua, the approximate dates of his tenure, the traditional date and circumstances of his murder, and the subsequent cult. No contemporary biography survives, and later lives depend on hagiographical convention as well as on local memory.
