Biography

Benedetta Bianchi Porro was born on 8 August 1936 in Dovadola, in the province of Forlì (now Forlì-Cesena) in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, the second of six children of Guido Bianchi Porro and Elsa Giammarchi. She was baptized the day after her birth and raised in a Catholic family. In infancy she contracted poliomyelitis, which left her with a permanent limp. Despite this early infirmity she was an intelligent and determined child with a strong religious sensibility. She received her First Holy Communion in 1944 and Confirmation in 1945. From youth she wished to study medicine in order to care for the sick, and after secondary school she pursued that aim.

In 1953 she enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Milan. While still a student she began to suffer progressive hearing loss. Examinations revealed a serious neurological condition, commonly identified in biographical accounts as neurofibromatosis (von Recklinghausen's disease), which produced tumors on nerve tissue. She continued her studies for several years despite increasing deafness, relying on lip-reading and written notes. Around 1957–1958 she underwent surgery to remove a cranial tumor; the operation left her with facial paralysis and further sensory losses. Worsening health forced her to abandon the university before taking a degree, and she returned to the care of her family.

Over the following years she lost her remaining hearing, then her sight, and finally the use of her limbs, becoming almost completely paralyzed and unable to speak clearly. Communication was reduced to tracing letters on another person's hand. In this isolation she developed a spirituality centered on union with the crucified Christ and on suffering offered for others. She kept a diary and wrote letters that later became the main sources for her interior life; in them she spoke of joy, acceptance of God's will, and concern for those who visited her. She remained a laywoman, never entering a religious order and never marrying, and she maintained a life of prayer with particular devotion to the Eucharist.

Benedetta Bianchi Porro died on 23 January 1964 at the age of twenty-seven, at Sirmione on Lake Garda. She was buried in the abbey church of Sant'Andrea in Dovadola, where her tomb became a place of prayer. A cause for beatification was introduced in due course. Pope Francis recognized her heroic virtues on 7 November 2018, declaring her Venerable. After approval of a miracle attributed to her intercession, she was beatified on 14 September 2019 in Forlì; Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu presided as papal legate. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 23 January.
