Biography

Short Description

Marco Passionei, known in religion as Benedetto da Urbino (Benedict of Urbino), was born in 1560 in Urbino, capital of the Duchy of Urbino in central Italy, into the noble Passionei family of comital rank. Like many sons of the provincial aristocracy in the later sixteenth century, he received a humanist education and studied civil and canon law, taking a doctorate. His family intended him for a secular career in administration or the courts. In early adulthood he instead turned toward religious life, a decision that, as was common when a legally trained heir left the world, met with family resistance before it was accepted.

In 1584 he entered the Capuchin reform of the Franciscan order, then still a relatively young congregation spreading through the Italian peninsula, and took the name Benedetto. The Capuchins were known for a strict reading of the Franciscan rule, for popular preaching, and for service to the poor and the sick. He made his profession, was ordained a priest, and adopted the penitential observance of the order. His public work was that of a missionary preacher. In the decades after the Council of Trent he gave popular missions and Lenten courses in the Marche and neighboring parts of central Italy, addressing mixed urban and rural audiences with catechesis and calls to repentance in a period of Catholic reform, recurrent hardship, and plague.

Later accounts compiled for his cause describe him as austere, humble, and charitable, though independent contemporary documentation of his individual journeys and sermons is limited, as is typical for many otherwise obscure mendicants of the age. He spent his last years in the Capuchin community at Fossombrone, not far from Urbino, and died there in 1625. A cult of holiness grew among the Capuchins and the local faithful. In the nineteenth century the apostolic process was completed, and Pope Pius IX beatified him in 1867. He is commemorated on 30 April, the traditional anniversary of his death. He was never canonized and remains a blessed of the Capuchin order. Surviving knowledge of his life rests largely on the hagiographical tradition of the order and on the acts of beatification rather than on a large body of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century archival material.
