Biography

Short Description

Benedict the Moor, known in Italian as Benedetto da San Fratello and popularly as San Benedetto il Moro, was born in 1526 in San Fratello, a mountain village in the province of Messina in northeastern Sicily, then a territory of the Kingdom of Sicily under Spanish Habsburg rule. His parents, Cristoforo and Diana Manasseri, were Africans who had been enslaved and brought to the island; they belonged to a local landowning family whose surname they used. Tradition holds that, in reward for their fidelity, their son was not held in bondage and grew up as a free Christian. As a youth Benedict worked as a shepherd and agricultural laborer. Even before entering religious life he was noted in the district for almsgiving, patience under racial insult, and a marked devotion to prayer.

In his early twenties he attached himself to a band of rural hermits who followed the Rule of Saint Francis, living first in the hills near San Fratello and later at other sites in Sicily. The community eventually recognized him as its leader. After the papacy required independent groups of hermits to join an approved order, the brothers were incorporated into the Observant branch of the Order of Friars Minor in the 1560s. Benedict entered as a lay brother, never proceeding to priestly ordination and remaining illiterate throughout his life. He was transferred to the Franciscan house of Santa Maria di Gesù on the outskirts of Palermo, where he spent the remainder of his years.

There he served for a long period in the kitchen and in other manual offices. Despite his status as an unlettered lay brother of African origin, he was later appointed guardian of the friary and master of novices, posts that testify to the esteem in which his community held him. Townspeople and visitors sought him out for counsel. Later hagiographical sources attribute to him miracles of healing, knowledge of consciences, and prophetic insight, as well as an austere practice of humility and fasting; such claims belong to the cultic tradition rather than to independently documented events. In old age he asked to be released from the duties of superior and returned to kitchen work. He died at the Palermo friary on 4 April 1589.

Public veneration began immediately after his death. His body was buried at Santa Maria di Gesù and was later described as incorrupt; it remains enshrined in that church and has long been a focus of pilgrimage. The fame of his sanctity spread through Sicily and the wider Spanish Mediterranean world. Pope Benedict XIV beatified him in 1743, and Pope Pius VII canonized him in 1807. His feast is kept on 4 April. In subsequent centuries he became an important heavenly patron for Catholics of African descent, especially in the Americas, and he is also invoked as a patron of Palermo, of Sicily, and of his native San Fratello.
