Biography

Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Benedicta Hyŏng Kyŏng-nyŏn was a Korean Catholic laywoman and martyr of the nineteenth century, one of the 103 Martyr Saints of Korea. She was born in 1793 in Joseon Korea, in the generation that followed the introduction of Catholicism to the peninsula in 1784. The faith had arrived largely through Korean scholars reading Christian books from China and through subsequent baptisms, well before a resident clergy was established. The Joseon state regarded Catholicism as a heterodox Western teaching that rejected Confucian ancestral rites and thereby threatened social order. Catholics therefore lived under intermittent but severe legal prohibition, gathering in secret and relying heavily on lay instructors.

Hyŏng Kyŏng-nyŏn remained unmarried and served as a catechist. In a Church that for decades had almost no priests, lay catechists—especially women who could instruct other women and children within the constraints of Joseon gender norms—were indispensable to the survival of the community. She was remembered for piety and for teaching doctrine to fellow believers who had to practice the faith in hiding. The Catholic population of Korea at this period remained small, numbered only in the thousands, and was concentrated in and around the capital and certain rural districts.

The Gihae persecution of 1839 was one of the most intense anti-Catholic campaigns of the Joseon era. After French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society entered the country and a bishop was appointed, the court launched a systematic hunt for Catholics. Bishop Laurent-Joseph-Marius Imbert and Fathers Pierre Maubant and Jacques Chastan were executed, as were prominent Korean lay leaders. Hyŏng Kyŏng-nyŏn was arrested in the course of this persecution. Like other prisoners she was interrogated and tortured in an effort to force apostasy and the betrayal of fellow Catholics. She refused to recant.

She was condemned and executed by beheading in Seoul in 1839. Catholic executions that year commonly took place at sites such as the Small West Gate (Seosomun) outside the city walls. Her martyrdom was later included in the documentary processes for beatification. She was among the Korean martyrs beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. On 6 May 1984 Pope John Paul II canonized the group of 103 Martyr Saints of Korea in a ceremony in Seoul, the first canonization celebrated outside Rome. She is commemorated with the other Korean martyrs on 20 September.
