Biography

Short Description

Enecon, known in Latin sources as Enecus or Eneco and in Spanish as Íñigo of Oña, was an eleventh-century Benedictine monk and abbot of the monastery of San Salvador de Oña in Castile. Traditional hagiography identifies Calatayud in Aragon as his place of birth, though no reliable source records a precise year of birth. The name Eneco (Basque Eneko) was borne by several figures in the Navarrese and Aragonese world of the early Middle Ages. According to the received account of his life, he entered the Benedictine monastery of San Juan de la Peña, a house of great prestige in the mountains of Aragon and closely tied to the early Christian kingdoms of the Pyrenees. After some years of cenobitic life he withdrew from the community to live as a hermit, seeking solitude and austerity in the wilderness.

The monastery of San Salvador de Oña, in the present province of Burgos, had been founded in 1011 by Sancho García, Count of Castile, and his wife Urraca, in part as a family pantheon and a house of prayer. In the following decades King Sancho III of Navarre, called the Great, who exercised wide authority over Navarre, Castile, and Aragon, summoned Íñigo from his hermitage and appointed him abbot of Oña. The appointment is generally placed in the early 1030s, before that king's death in 1035. As abbot, Íñigo is credited with restoring or deepening Benedictine regular observance at Oña and with governing the community in a spirit of reform characteristic of the monastic renewal of the age, which was influenced by Cluniac ideals then spreading through the Christian kingdoms of Iberia. Later writers describe him as a counsellor of princes and a wonder-worker, though the miracle stories attached to his name belong to the hagiographical tradition rather than to strictly contemporary documentation.

Íñigo died at his monastery on 1 June 1057 and was buried at San Salvador de Oña. Veneration at his tomb developed soon afterward; the house remained an important royal and noble burial church, and the abbot's reputation for sanctity was kept alive by the monks and by the people of the region. In 1259 Pope Alexander IV formally canonized him. His feast day is 1 June. He is honoured as the patron saint of Calatayud, the town claimed as his birthplace, and of Oña. In the sixteenth century the Basque nobleman Íñigo López de Loyola, later Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, received the same given name in honour of this earlier saint, a fact that helped keep Enecon's memory current in the wider Church.

Beyond the outline of monastic career, abbacy, death, and canonization, many particulars found in late medieval and early modern lives of Saint Íñigo cannot be confirmed from independent historical evidence. No authentic writings by him survive, and the earliest narrative accounts were composed well after his death. He remains, however, a well-attested example of the Benedictine abbot-reformer in eleventh-century Christian Spain, and his cult has been continuous at Oña and in Aragon from the Middle Ages to the present.
