Biography

Short Description

Bénigne Joly was a Catholic priest of seventeenth-century France, born in 1644 in Dijon, then the capital of the province of Burgundy. He belonged to a family of the noblesse de robe; his father held office in the Parlement of Burgundy, the sovereign court of the province. Formed in the religious atmosphere of a devout household and educated at the Jesuit college of Dijon, he proceeded to studies for the priesthood and was ordained. He obtained a canonry in the Sainte-Chapelle of Dijon, a collegiate church of royal foundation that served the former ducal palace. The prebend attached to the canonry gave him a regular income, which he treated as a trust for the poor rather than as personal property.

Joly’s public ministry was marked by an exceptional dedication to charitable works. He frequented the hospitals of Dijon, including the Hôtel-Dieu, bringing both material relief and spiritual consolation to the sick. He visited the prisons, where he assisted inmates with food, clothing, and religious instruction, and he attended condemned prisoners in their last hours. He took a particular interest in the plight of poor girls and women, seeking to remove them from destitution and moral danger by providing shelter, honest work, and Christian education. To this end he employed his own fortune and solicited the help of other benefactors in Dijon. His activity belonged to the broader current of Catholic Reform charity that characterized urban France in the decades after the Council of Trent.

In his personal life Joly practiced evangelical poverty and austerity. He lived in simple lodgings, limited his food and sleep, and devoted long periods to prayer, the Divine Office, and the celebration of Mass. He avoided worldly society and the honors that his birth and office might have brought him. Those who knew him testified to his humility, patience, and constant availability to anyone in need. At the same time his uncompromising zeal occasionally provoked criticism from persons who regarded his manner of life as excessive for a canon of the Sainte-Chapelle.

Joly died in Dijon in 1694 after a relatively short life consumed by pastoral labor. He was mourned especially by the poor. A local reputation for sanctity formed around his memory; biographical notices were composed and his example was cited in later centuries as a model of the charitable priest. No formal process of beatification or canonization has been completed, and he is not inscribed in the general calendar of saints. He remains, however, a notable figure in the ecclesiastical history of Dijon and of Burgundy, illustrating the ideal of priestly charity in the France of Louis XIV.
