Biography

Short Description

Benincasa da Montepulciano was born in 1375 in Montepulciano, a hill town in Tuscany in the territory then associated with Siena. Surviving notices of his family and childhood are extremely limited, as is typical for many late medieval Italian religious whose fame remained largely local. In his youth he entered the convent of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (the Servites) in his native town. The Servites were a mendicant order founded in the thirteenth century and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sources describe him as a priest of that order who adopted a markedly penitential manner of life, distinguished by austerity, fasting, and prayer rather than by high office or public preaching.

Seeking greater solitude, he withdrew from ordinary conventual life to live as a hermit while remaining a Servite. He first occupied a small hut outside Monticchiello, a settlement near Montepulciano. In 1422 he moved to a more spacious cell at Bagni San Filippo in the Val d'Orcia, a locality known for thermal springs, and he spent the remainder of his life there in eremitical seclusion. Accounts of his character stress humility and personal holiness. He is not recorded as having held major administrative posts in the order, nor as having left writings that survive in the standard modern summaries of his life.

He died at Bagni San Filippo on 9 May 1426. A local cult of veneration grew after his death among the faithful of the region and within the Servite Order and continued for centuries. In 1829 Pope Pius VIII confirmed this longstanding cultus, an act that in the procedures of the time constituted beatification; Benincasa is therefore styled Blessed. He was not subsequently canonized. His feast is kept on 9 May, the day of his death. No securely documented list of patronages is attached to his name in the principal hagiographical directories, and details of miracles, the precise circumstances of his burial, and the later history of his relics are not firmly established in the readily available historical notices.

The documentary record for Benincasa remains sparse. What can be stated with reasonable confidence is his birth at Montepulciano in 1375, his profession in the Servite Order, his later eremitical life in southern Tuscany at Monticchiello and then at Bagni San Filippo, his death on 9 May 1426, and the nineteenth-century papal confirmation of his cult. Broader claims about his inner life, prodigies, or family status go beyond what the principal modern summaries securely attest.
